SITC Project Summary • Purpose: Establish an IT center for high school students in Ethiopia • Primary activity: Purchase 3 new computers from Ethiopia and set up access to the internet. • Target Group: High school students in Ethiopia • Place: library in designated high school • Project Design: Development sub-committee • ProjectOwnership: ESUO • Facilitators: • Resource persons in Ethiopia (BiniyamSisay and Solomon Yimer) • Envoy Oslo-Addis + IT consultant (NigussieTadesse) • Budget: 10,000 NOK (from ESUO monthly contributions) • Duration of phase 1: from September 14 to December 31st 2008

  4. SITC Main Activities • Selecting beneficiary school with these criteria • Low income • Minimum infrastructure (electricity, telephone, secure room…) • Proximity (to minimize expenses and to be within reach of facilitators) • Adequate number of students • In consultation with education bureau

  5. Fitawrari Abayneh Metekia Secondary School • New school established 3 years ago • Located in Akaki (in the outskirts of Addis) • Currently hosts 2200 students (45.5% girls) • Has material/financial problems (no computers before SITC project) • Serves mostly students from low-income families

  6. … continued (SITC main activities) • Purchase 3 new PCs with network accessories • Sending used PCs from Norway is expensive (1500-2000NOK/PC shipping + tax in Eth.) • New PCs therefore usable for longer period • 1 year warranty • Process is less time-consuming • Tax, transp. costs… pre-paid so less bureaucratic • Provides badly-needed foreign currency to Eth. • Local business in Eth. will benefit • We ensure Eth. is not dumping ground for used goods

  7. … continued (SITC main activities) • Setup network • Sponsor basic IT training of 2 librarians • Purchase a few self-help IT books

  8. SITC Project Recommendations for Phase 2 (Jan-Dec 2009) • Increase internet connection time (currently only 2hours/day is sponsored by the project) • Increase number of PCs • Purchase 1 printer • Attract more partners/donors • Gradually withdraw from project
