General Education from Islamic Perspective • Involves a teacher, a student and knowledge which are transferred between them. • Learning as a means of worshipping God (ibadah). • Consider the next life to be the most important phase of human existence.
The Curriculum of Islamic Learning • Based on the tradition of early scholars:- -students were required to follow a particular school of legal though (mathhab). -the techniques of learning were to absorb rather than questioning. -the Maulana, religious scholar dispense formulae and prescriptions for things without any explanation.
Islam has suggested 5 Approaches of Learning 1. Educational Integrated Approach 2. An appreciation of Islam in Curricular Approach 3. Philosophy Approach 4. Spiritual Approach 5. Mankind Development Approach
Educational Integrated Approach -a source from Al-Qur’an and Hadis -initiative and discipline is strongly emphasize • Appreciation of Islam in Curricular Approach -included the inculcation of Islamic values -to ensure that the students try to apply the Islamic values to their daily life • Philosophy Approach -children will be trained using the method of philosophy -this approach ensure the students to possess a healthy mind • Spiritual Approach -included worship (iman) and devotion (taqwa) • Human Development Approach -involves the cultivation of moral values to mould the students -curriculum needs to be carried out
Learning Process from Islamic Perspective FIRST LEVEL: Birth - 8months SECOND LEVEL: ‘mumayyiz’ age – adulthood
Learning Process form the Islamic Perspective • The levels of the learning process -two levels • Learning process at the second stage -will be taught about Al-Qur’an -should be guided by the eldest and teachers -should be emphasize about the appropriate ways to behave (adab) -should be taught how to behave socially and basic education such as learning Al-Qur’an and Hadis
Children’s Early Education based on Islamic Perspective • Inculcation • of Faith 2. Moral Education 3. Physical Education 5. Social Education 4. Mental Education
Inculcation of Faith -will be able to recognize and differentiate the bad and good things -will be taught how to pronounce each word of Al-Qur’an -at 7 year old, they have to be trained to pray • Moral Education -involves principles and believes concerning right and wrong behaviour -forbade adults to show lying habits, exposing their ‘aurah’ and wearing silk for the sons -treat the eldest well and take good care of their parents
Physical Education -need to be given more attention in fulfilling their physiological needs -should be given proper food with enough nutrients -encouraged doing outdoor activities • Mental Education -Al-Qur’an and laws -Islamic and secular matters -Islamic history -Islamic culture • Social Education -to prepare the children with the appropriate values -inculcate the values of brotherhood, forgiveness and bravery -need to understand well about the neighbourhood
Priorities of Knowledge due to Islamic Perspective • The source -revealed knowledge -non-revealed knowledge • The level of obligation -individually requisite knowledge (fardhu ain) -socially requisite knowledge (fardhu kifayah) • The social function -praiseworthy knowledge -permissible knowledge -blameworthy knowledge
Conclusion • The Islamic educational system never divorce mind from soul. • Islamic education system must deeply rooted in a metaphysics derived from the comprehensive vision of the Al Qur’an. • Islamic education aims is to provide a milieu for the total and balanced development of every student in every sphere.
