Feudalism • A social hierarchy that mapped out Medieval society • Emperor, King or Lord at the top • Nobles or Barons next • Then Knights • Finally, Serfs & Peasants • You fought, prayed or worked
Religion in the Middle Ages You there…with the bald spot…don’t touch me • Christianity spreads throughout the old Roman Empire • Only thing to unite the people • The Church is very powerful and important • Everyone wants to get to heaven • Monasteries become the only real intellectual centers
The Glory of the Church • The age of the Gothic Church • This shows wealth and power • Stained glass, flying buttresses, spires, vaulted ceilings, gargoyles, etc • Notre Dame Cathedral is built during this time
Living in Constant Fear I enjoy running through dewy meadows • Constant fear existed during the Middle Ages • Norsemen or Northmen • Vikings • Magyars • Muslims • They all caused problems for people in the early Middle Ages • This helped lead to Feudalism
The Crusades • Europe’s efforts to win the Holy Land from the Muslims • Crusaders are promised salvation • People go for all sorts of reasons • Religion is not always the main one • These wars will help lead to the end of the Dark Ages Adventure! Salvation! Chicks! $
The Plague No…I can’t play ball right now…I am about to die a horrible death • 1/3 of Europe’s population is killed • Begins in 1347 • Jews are blamed • New attitude, “Live for today”
