  1. An Ugly Truth vs A Pretty Lie In your notes, answer the following question: Would you rather be told the ugly truth or a pretty lie? Explain your reasoning. Be prepared to share your responses

  2. Shakespearean Scramble Working in your groups, you will transform a scrambled quatrain from a sonnet into a sentence(s) that make sense. Once your group completes this task, you need to write your quatrain on the poster and paraphrase it (put it into your own words). For this task, it might be beneficial for your group to locate the words that could be considered for the subject and then match them to possible verbs. In short, create short sentences (S-V-O) first. Then create dependent clauses and other phrases to modify those sentences.

  3. Shakespeare’s Meter What is iambic pentameter? (10 syllables, 5 iambs) U -- / U -- / U -- / U -- / U – Why iambic pentameter? Iambic pentameter is the closest to human speech. Task: Often, Shakespeare inverted the word order in his sentences so that the most important words fell on the stressed beats. Taking your cue from Shakespeare, rearrange the words of your quatrain so that it makes a “Shakespearean” sentence. Write the new sentence on the poster. Share your responses.

  4. An Ugly Truth or A Pretty Lie Finally, re-read the quatrain that your group created. Then answer the question: In what way does the quatrain suggest an ugly truth or pretty lie? Be specific.
