1811 • John Lattimore moves from the Carolina’s to the banks of Graham Creek & Jennings County is purchased from the Indian’s in the “Grouseland Purchase”
1813 • Jennings is the 1st COUNTY in the nation to legislate that the county library must be FREE!
1815 • The City of Vernon is created by John Vawter. Vawter purchased one square mile of land. It is named after Mount Vernon, home of George Washington.
1816 • The Vernon Baptist Church is constructed and re-constructed in 1871
1816 • The Vernon Cemetery is created
1817 • “The Commons” 1st Public Playground in Indiana is created in Vernon
1817 • Jennings County is created. It is named for Indiana’s first governor and we are the only Jennings County in the nation • Thanks to Governor Jennings, Indiana was established as an non slave state.
1817 • The 1st school is opened in Vernon and the most local Indians move west, and are seldom seen afterwards…
1818 • Geneva township (and town) is created and named after the capital of the country they came from. The City of Geneva is created at an Indian Village & Trading Post, but it no longer survives.
1818 • The Vawter Tavern is opened in Vernon. Breakfast & supper cost 25 cents and Dinner is 37 cents. An overnight stay is 12.5 cents
1820 • In the 1820 census, U.S. Marshall John Vawter counts 2,027 people in Jennings County. Over 700 are under the age of 10. • The Jennings County population would double in 10 years.

1837 • The city of Brewersville is created. It had a drug store, several general stores, a saloon, wagon shop and blacksmith
1838 • The Madison to Vernon Railroad was constructed (north & south). A four-horse stagecoach travel to Indy from Vernon twice a week. Cheap transportation enables huge growth of factory goods and supplies.
1839 • The City of Scipio is created by William Clapp and is named after a famous Roman General, Scipio Africanus
1840 • The Madison to Vernon Railroad was extended to Indianapolis & the bi-weekly stage coach from Vernon ceases.
1840 • The population is now 8,829 people in Jennings County
1841 • Volney Palmer opens the first advertising agency in Philadelphia
1844 • 1st telegraph was send by Morse Code “What hath God Wrought” from Washington to Baltimore
1847 • Vinegar Mill is opened. Rock is shipped by rail to distant areas, including the Indianapolis Courthouse.
1848 • The Vernon Visitor changes its name to the Vernon Banner
1850 • St. Joe’s Church is built in Spencer Township
1850 • In the 1850 census, there are 12,095 people in the county, nearly 2,000 can not read or write.
1850’s • The Ohio & Mississippi Railroad is constructed through Jennings County (east & west)
1851 • Western Union begins delivering Telegrams, via transmitters (wire)
1852 • The 1st industry is built in North Vernon. A sawmill and furniture factory called Tripp Hicks and Company opens.
1853 • Railroad lines reach west to the Mississippi River • The RR line from Cincinnati is extended thru Tripton and (North Vernon) ranks 3rd in the state for RR traffic
1853 • North Vernon opens their first hotel and post office
