Chapter 10: Plot Summary -Typhus Outbreak ends -Brings lots of attention to Lowood - Reveals the poor conditions of the school -Several Benefactors invest in the school to repair it. -Mr. Brocklehurst retained his title of treasurer, but he was assisted in making decisions. -Ms. Temple retained her title of superintendent of the seminary -In total Jane spent eight years at Lowood: six years as a student and two years as a teacher. -Jane held the rank of “the first girl in the first class”
Chapter 10: Plot Summary -Ms. Temple had given Jane friendship, solace, discipline and motherly love -Married a clergyman, Rev. Mr. Nasmyth -When Ms. Temple got married and left, Jane had difficulty with coping with losing Ms.Temple -Jane had taken up a lot of Ms. Temple’s habits and aspects of her personality; appearing more disciplined and subdued. -Ms. Temple’s departure re-awakens Jane’s rebelliousness -Jane developed a bit of wanderlust and desired for freedom and change -She wanted to break away from the familiar -In all of the eight years of her being at Lowood Jane has never had any contact with Mrs. Reed or the Reed family
Chapter 10: Plot Summary -Jane wrote a letter and delivered it to the post office in Lowood to advertise her teaching qualifications in hopes of being hired somewhere else. -A week went by and at the end of that week Jane received a letter from Mrs. Fairfax offering a job as a governess-Jane had to go to the superintendent and explain that there was a new job opportunity for her. -The administration had to consent to her decision to leave. -Jane was given a fortnight (two weeks) to prepare for her journey to Thornfield -On her last night at Lowood, Jane was visited by Bessie and Bessie’s son, Bobby -Bessie reveals that the Reeds are falling apart and that a Mr. Eyre visited the Reed’s home

Chapter 11: Plot Summary • When Jane arrives at Millcotte, no one is there to receive her • Surpised at Mrs. Fairfax’s hospitality and kindness • Thornfield is a large mansion that feels almost like a church • Feels very lonely • Possibly Haunted? • Jane learns of Mr. Rochester, the real owner • She also begins tutoring Adela, who speaks French • Learns how she came to stay with Mr. Rochester • Well Learned and Attentive • Mr. Rochester is peculiar, and somewhat mysterious • His family is known to be violent

Chapter 12: Plot Summary • Jane likes her new home, but still does not feel satisfied • While travelling home from the post office, Jane helps a man on horseback who slipped on the ice • He has dark, stern features • Jane sees a dog, which reminds her of a story she learned as a child • She returns to Thornfield and discovers that the man was Mr. Rochester and the dog was named Pilot • Mr. Rochester does not introduce himself • Later, Mr. Carter, a surgeon, is called for Mr. Rochester’s injured foot.

Chapter 13: Plot Summary -Mr. Rochester claims the library, pushing Jane and Adele elsewhere -Mr. Rochester clearly spoils Adele -showers her in gifts -Jane much prefers having Mr. Rochester in Thornfield -It is less quiet, she feels more content and less restless -Mr. Rochester invites Jane, Adele, and Mrs. Fairfax for tea - Mr. Rochester begins asking Jane about her life - Makes her play the piano and show him her artwork -Learns of the conflict within Rochester’s family -Was not the original heir to the estate

Chapter 14: Plot Summary -Jane and Adele see little of Mr. Rochester over the next few days -Jane notices Mr. Rochester’s moodiness -Jane and Adele are summoned to the library by Mr. Rochester -Adele’s present has arrived -She is very excited and makes many exclamations in French - Jokingly, Mr. Rochester acts irritated at Adele -Mr. Rochester has Mrs. Fairfax join them in the library so that Adele has someone to share her delight -Also so she is not out of the loop
Chapter 14: Plot Summary -Mr. Rochester and Jane start up another odd conversation concerning personal appearances and what Jane thinks of his appearance -Jane believes Mr. Rochester’s odd behavior a result of too much wine -Seeing that he has finally caused Jane to be perplexed, for once, Mr. Rochester remarks that although Jane is not pretty, a puzzled air suits her -At one point, Mr. Rochester explains that he would like to reform himself to his own liking rather than repent; he seems to be very displeased with his fault(s) -Eventually Jane admits that she isn’t quite sure how to respond to Mr. Rochester’s comments because she cannot keep up with his odd conversation -Mr. Rochester states that Jane is holding back; that the Lowood constraints she grew up with still retain a hold on her. And he knows that with time she break free of those constraints and reveal her “true” self -Before Jane sets off to put Adele to bed, Mr. Rochester explains some of his adoration for Adele; revealing his true feelings for the little girl – in a sense she warms his heart
