  2. When did they begin? In 1894 when sheet music publishers still ran the music business, Edward B. Marks and Joe Stern hired electrician George Thomas and various performers to promote sales of their song -The little lost child. Thomas projected a series of still images on a screen simultaneously with live performance in what became popular form of entertainment known as the illustrated song. This has been classed as the first music video.

  3. What are they used for? Mainly used as a marketing device to promote the sale of music recordings.

  4. Development… • 1981 MTV was launched airing “video killed the radio star” and beginning an era of 24 hour a day music on TV. • A key innovation of the development of music videos was the relatively cheap and easy to use video and editing equipment. • Enabled many Pop stars to create quick, cheap promotional videos.

  5. Development… • During this time directors began to explore different genres and styles. • Used more sophisticated effects in their videos, added in storylines and plots.

  6. Internet • 2005 when youtube was launched, it made it easier for people to watch the music videos online • Artists began to see success from their videos just being online.

  7. Notable Examples… • Michael Jackson’s Thriller set new standards for production with the video costing $500,000 to film. • It helped get more African American music videos to be played onto MTV
