Introduction • Buddhism • Began in India • Based on the teachings of the Buddha, "Awakened One" • Lived 563 - 483 BCE • Began as a prince named Siddhartha Gautama • Walked away from royal life at age 29 • Went in search of spiritual peace • Learned truth during journey • Shared truths with others
Introduction • Differences with Hinduism • Not based on complicated rituals and beliefs in many gods • Way of life based on simple teachings • Embraced all people regardless of caste • Taught people how to reach enlightenment • Enlightenment ends reincarnation
Prince Siddhartha's Birth • Born 563 BCE • After birth a soft, warm rain of heavenly flowers fell on the baby and mother • Infant looked a few years old and could walk and talk • Took a few steps and said "I am the leader of the world and the guide to the world" • Northern India near the Himalaya Mountains • Father, powerful king • Mother, Queen Maya • Had a dream before son's birth • Ask Brahmins to explain dream • Interpretations • if he remained a prince, he could rule universe • if he left royal life he would become a Buddha, one who is enlightened
The Prince's royal Life • Father worried that son would give up royal duties to seek spiritual path • King protected his son and provided him with everything • Prince curious about the outside world • Married at age of 16 and lived in perfect peace • At age 29 Siddhartha had a son
The Prince Discovers Three Forms of Suffering • Siddhartha allowed to travel outside the royal palace after son's birth • Discovered 3 forms of suffering • First trip • Saw an old man walking with the aid of a stick • Prince was told that everyone's body weakens as it ages • second trip • Saw a man crying out in pain on the ground • Told that the man was sick • third trip • Saw a group of people carrying a figure wrapped in white cloth • Told that death came for that man and would come for him too.
The Prince Discovers Three Forms of Suffering • Troubled by discovery of aging, sickness, and death • Fourth Trip • Saw a man who glowed with inner peace and calm • Man was an ascetic • An ascetic is someone who gives up worldly pleasures such as possessions, fine clothes, money, and even shelter. • Ascetic said, "To be free of suffering, one must give up the desires, pleasures, and comforts of the world. I find peace by helping others find peace."
The Prince Becomes an Ascetic • Prince desired the happiness and peace of the ascetic • Prince removed his signs of royalty, cut off his hair, put on a simple robe and kept a bowl for alms • Began meditation and quickly became an expert • Followed way of ascetics until he became pitifully thin • Became unhappy with extreme way of life • Did not find the key to enlightenment in asceticism
The Prince Becomes the Buddha • Prince decided to balance himself between extremes of pleasure and pain • He sought a "middle way" • On his 35th birthday he reached a tree and vowed to meditate until he reached enlightenment • During meditation a wicked god, Mara, tried to frighten him • Then Mara tempted him by sending his 3 daughters: Discontent, Delight, and Desire • Meditated throughout the night about the nature of reality and how to reach nirvana • He saw his past lives and cycle of rebirth • He saw the importance of karma • He saw how to gain freedom from the endless cycle and end all suffering • He reached enlightenment
The Prince Becomes the Buddha • The truths he discovered are called The Four Noble Truths • Suffering is present in all things, and nothing lasts forever • Suffering is caused by cravings (desires and wants) • The way to end suffering is to give up all cravings • The way to give up all cravings to live life according to the Eightfold Path
The Buddha's Teachings • Pleasure does not last forever • Eightfold path follows the "middle way" • Buddha chose to teach other the path • His followers spread his teachings throughout India and other parts of Asia • Eightfold Path • Right understanding • Right purpose • right speech • Right action • Right way to earn a living • Right effort • Right mindfulness • Right concentration
