  2. Location and Geography • Hawaii is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean • 19°N 155°W • The state of Hawaii is really just a group of volcanoes that came up from out of the ocean. Hawaiian Facts and Culture • The official languages are English and Hawaiian • There are only 12 letters in the Hawaiian alphabet. • Vowels: A, E, I, O, U • Consonants: H, K, L, M, N, P, W • Some people live in the huts that you see in photos but there are also a lot of people who live in houses similar to those here. • There are approximately 1,285,498 people in Hawaii and there are a variety of religions • Hawaii is made up of 137 islands and atolls but most of them are to small to live on. • The currency is the US dollar ($) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/hawaii Wikipedia Hawaii, February 22, 2006

  7. Pahu[pah' hoo] Pahu Music • The Pahu is a large drum usually made of stone and covered with deer skin. • The Pahu was 1st made 14 centuries ago. • It is played by beating on the deer skin covered top. • It makes a deep pounding noise. http://www.flickr.com/photos/8322486@N04/1338257855/

  8. kâ`eke `eke music kâ`eke`eke • The kâ`eke `eke is made of a long bamboo pipes of varying lengths • This instrument has been around for hundreds of years and is often used in rituals. • When you hit the bamboo sticks on the ground they make a sound. • This instrument makes a deep unique sound when it hits the ground. http://www.hawaiianfeathers.com/ka%60eke%60eke.JPG
