POLICIES • INTEGRATED FOOD SECURITY STRATEGY 2002 • 2013 DRAFT FOOD SECURITY AND NUTRITION POLICY FOR SA • The Primary School Nutrition Programme (PSNP) was one of the lead projects initiated in 1994 as part of the INP, but was transferred from the Department of Health to the Department of Education in 2004 with a subsequent name change to the National School Nutrition Programme. • To further address micronutrient status, the INP focuses on fortification of staple foods. Salt iodisation has been mandatory since 1995. Since 2003 it has been mandatory to fortify all maize meal and wheat bread flour with iron, zinc, vitamin A and the B-vitamins.
