EVA 5: Batteries, FGS, NOBL Ed Nelan May 21, 2009
Batteries: • original batteries are 14 years older than design lifetime. • new batteries are an improved design • EVAs 2 & 5
Batteries: • replacement batteries have passed Aliveness & Functional Tests
FGS2: • FGS2 was replaced due to failing LEDs on its star selector servos, which put guide star acquisitions at risk. • Replacement FGS2 successfully passed it Aliveness and Functional Test • We now have: • FGS3 (original) • FGS2 (new) • FGS1 (1997)
FGS2 Aliveness Test: High Voltage On, PMT dark counts > 0 Courtesy of Goodrich
FGS2 Functional Test, part 1: • fine lock acquisition of Internal Test Source (ITS) • demonstrates interferometer functions “half” S-curve typically seen in fine lock acquisition Courtesy of Goodrich
FGS2 Functional Test, part 2: • move AMA motors • +8 steps motor1 • - 8 steps motor2 • observe ITS position in finelock • move AMA motors back • - 8 steps motor1 • +8 steps motor2 • observe ITS position in finelock • observed shift of ITS position verifies AMA functions • test was a complete success.
Upcoming FGS SMOV activities • Guide star acquisition tests (FGS1 & 3) • May 22 • FGS2 ITS measurement • May 22 • Checks for short term stability (compare to FT) • FGS1r Trans Mode observations of AMA target stars • May 31 • FGS2 AMA adjustments • June 1 through June 9
