NITRATES We were wondering how high the levels of nitrates in the samples collected from two local rivers were.
NITRATES We filled 6 vials with 10 ml of stream water and added a packet of NirtiVer3 to each. We shook the bottles vigorously for one minute, then let them sit for five minutes. After they had been sitting for five minutes, we measured the nitrate levels with the DR/850.
Nitrates in mg/L Median from East River:1.2 mg/L NITRATES - Results Nitrate levels from Ashwaubenon Creek.
NITRATES We found that the nitrate levels in the creek were not safe. The levels should be lower than 1 ppm. The highest we had was 1.5 ppm.
NITRATES Nitrates are bad in drinking water. In infants under the age of six months, high nitrate levels can cause them to be seriously ill and have shortness of breath. They may even die from something known as Blue Baby syndrome (EPA).
NITRATES Nitrates in rivers come from runoff from fertilizers, leaking septic tanks, sewage, and natural erosion (EPA).
NITRATES High nitrate levels also threaten amphibians. Their habitat is destroyed and the nitrates cause developmental deformities, and reduced swimming and feeding rates("Environment Canada").
NITRATES We can help reduce the amount of nitrogen in our water by using less fertilizer and by checking for leaks and monitoring sewage systems. Public water systems can check levels and remove nitrates with special equipment (APEC).
