The International Meat Secretariat (IMS) brings together meat and livestock organisations throughout the world • Non-profit making association. • Forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences on international issues: conferences, meetings, publications • Representation in international organisations: FAO, OIE, OECD • Members: national meat and livestock organisations, corporations and other bodies connected with the meat and livestock sector • More than 90 members in over 30 countries around the world INTERNATIONAL MEAT SECRETARIAT

  3. Meat, dairy products, draft power (eg. India) • High quality protein, heme iron, vitamin b12 • Convert grass (and by-products) into protein • Leather, wool • Landscape, biodiversity • Water and soil quality • Economic and social benefits WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF LIVESTOCK?

  4. BENCHMARKING • Produce more of what we want • Produce less of what we don’t want • Continuous improvement « journey » not a « destination », • Identify hotspots • Improve profitability HOW DO WE BECOME MORE SUSTAINABLE?

  5. Pre-competitive issue • From feed to meat and dairy • Need for international normalized methods • Realistic • Credible • Account for both +ve and –ve impacts • Partnership with FAO on LCA (LEAP) • Partnership with FAO GAA PARTNERSHIP WITH FAO AND OTHER PARTNERS

IMS Members committed to continuous improvement, some examples (of many): • USA National Cattlemen’s Beef Assocition “triple bottom line” LCA developed with BASF • USA National Pork Board Live Swine Carbon Footprint Calculator • Brazil Low Carbon Agriculture (ABC) program –restore degraded grasslands • Canada, Quebec Env. and Socio-Economic LCA • Etc., etc. CONCRETE COMMITMENTS

  7. Livestockkey contribution to feeding the world • Livestock = livelihood for 1B poor (FAO) • Count positive contributions as well –social and environmental services provided by livestock SUSTAINABLE LIVESTOCK

  8. Sustainability can only be achieved if the livestock sector can make a profit • We are all contributing to sustainability through continuous improvement … • in our OWN SITUATION–there is no one size fits all • THERE IS NO FOOD SECURITY WITHOUT LIVESTOCK! SUSTAINABLE LIVESTOCK
