  2. What is Netiquette? • Internet – connected networks • Etiquette – code of conduct • Net + iquette = a code of conduct for connected networks

  3. How do you use Netiquette? • Respectful – Type what you would say to someone face to face. • Responsible - Only send people pictures/e-mails they want. • Safe – Stay away from anything illegal or hurtful.

  4. Why use Netiquette? • You are the same person in “real life” as you are online. • All people have feelings. Feelings can be hurt. • You don’t want to be hurt, so don’t hurt others.

  5. Not everyone uses Netiquette! • You have the right to “unfriend” someone who hurts you online. • Tell an adult if anyone sends you inappropriate pictures or e-mails that make you feel uncomfortable.

  6. Not everyone uses Netiquette! • Stay calm. Flame wars don’t solve the problem. • Avoid using profanity. You don’t know who’s reading your chats/e-mails. • Respect that other people have a different opinion.

  7. Basic Netiquette • DON’T TYPE IN ALL CAPS. • Use abbreviations and smilies only with close friends and family. • Remember that all Internet conversations /pictures can be made public, even e-mail!

  8. Basic Netiquette • Hacking into others’ accounts is rude and hurtful. • Only post true information. • Sometimes its better NOT to post information, even if it is true!

  9. Scenarios • Read the scenario. • Discuss what the person should/should not do. • Vote/write your answer. • Explain your answer.

  10. Group Work Assignments • Reads the scenario • Starts discussion (What do you think about…?) and tallies votes (Who votes…?) • Changes to next slide • Presents answer to class

  11. Scenario #1 Anna Marie likes Roberto. One day, she receives a picture from Roberto that makes her feel uncomfortable. What should she do?

  12. Scenario #2 Shane found a joke on the Internet he thinks is very funny. He wants to send it to everyone he knows, including all the teachers at school. Should he? Why or why not?

  13. Scenario #3 Sarani’sFacebook friends post rude comments and inappropriate pictures on Sarani’s wall. What should Sarani do?

  14. Scenario #4 In a chat room, Remmington sees people saying mean, untrue things about his best friend. What should Remmington do?
