In the UK, there is a growing ESOL provision ‘focus’ on learners aged between 16 and 19, many of whom have had limited or interrupted access to formal education in their lives
Literacy, for these young people is often seen as an ‘issue’ ‘in a ‘classroom sense’
Classroom and assessment practices in ESOL are based around ‘print’ literacies of one form or another
Outside classrooms, young adult ESOL learners are using the Internet, texting, chatting, sharing photos, sharing music, videos
formal educationdoes not ! While, these are the kind of literacies that young people value today…
We have a border between the cultures of school and youthHow do we facilitate crossing this border, and make participation in formal education more accessible for these young people?
I propose a two-way bridge modelIn one direction, we see possibilities for digital technologies to create access to the ‘privileged’ classroom literacieswhile in the other, opportunities to value young people’s literacy practices
Watch these learner videos@ www.vimeo.com/groups/web2english How can we understand such literacy work in terms of the two-way bridge model?
