Distance Learning Packets • Students study vocabulary lists, do vocabulary activities and reading worksheets outside of class. • Hand in to teacher for correction. • Students keep track of vocabulary too on lists. • Feedback on how well they understand topics/competencies.
Student Buy-in • Maintain ongoing communication with students. • Build a class culture • of doing outside work. • Modeling of the packet procedures.
CASAS Comes Back in the Classroom Example: City Health Services announces a new project to educate young people on maintaining good health. CHS will coordinate with local schools to reach out to teens identified as having potential health issues. Teens aged 13 to 18 will receive a complete health appraisal. Training topics will include nutrition, exercise, and healthy weight-loss strategies. The focus will be on self-image, fitness, and food. Participants will identify healthy meals, develop exercise plans, and examine lifestyle choices. Question: What is the purpose of the new project?
Reading skills can also taught around topics driven by student interest. • Make more time for conversation, vocabulary building activities in class.

Writing Goal: Students will independently write short essays that are clearly organized and well developed, in which errors do not interfere with fluent reading and understanding.
Writing Objectives • Discuss purposes of writing modes and when and where the modes might be used. • Discuss key text structure elements of each mode. • Example: persuasive writing has: • clear position, reasons with support, consideration & attack of the opposing position, conclusion.
Writing Objectives II • Students explain and demonstrate strategies for planning, drafting and revising their essays. • Students monitor writing progress and application of strategies.
