E N D
Past Experience • Break up into groups of two or three • Introduce yourself briefly • Share a memorable learning experience as an adult • What made this experience memorable? • How did learning occur for you?
Assumptions • Who is viewed as having knowledge and experience in a traditional learning environment? • What is different about the learning experience for an adult as compared to a child or adolescent? What are some of the reasons why you think this? • What are the assumptions about adult learners vs previous experiences in traditional education? • Turn to a partner and share a few of these assumptions… • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLoPiHUZbEw
Knowles 6 Assumptions • Need to know • Self-concept • Experience • Readiness to learn • Orientation • Motivation • Self assessment/reflective exercise…use a recent learning opportunity and go through these assumptions.
Classroom Environment • Feedback from other students…”I’ve never been in an entire class without a desk…I’ve never been in a class for an entire week without a desk” • Some lecture with a majority of our time spent in circle. • A focus on self-awareness in order to discuss, facilitate, and build skills in order to better understand and respond to conflict. • A heavy focus on practice with theoretical support. • Your learning community has a significant amount of knowledge and experience – lets leverage it.
Structure of Content • Each day in the classroom is designed through guiding questions • Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) are written to help focus our learning together • The readings and viewing of videos should be done in preparation for that class. (flipped classroom) • Some information my seem logical, but when you go to practice it ”on purpose” it can be a bit more difficult (Affect exercises)
Modality • Online learning…what does this mean for you as an adult learner? • How do you create connected and engaged learning environments in-person or online? • How has multiple sources of information changed the way we learn? • https://fortunelords.com/youtube-statistics/ (facts and figures regarding YouTube) • More than 25% of students in college are enrolled in at least one online course (EdTech, 2/2016) ( 5,828,826 students online)
Reflection • How has the frame of adult learning or andragogy changed how you might think about restorative approaches to learning? • How do we engage with content that creates opportunities that helps create meaning for adults? • How do we set up these learning environments on purpose?
Teaching for the Future https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KALCoUP2bkw • Compare previous learning experiences to a potentially more engaged learning environment. • Discuss how adult learners can maximize multiple sources of information within their network to learn and grow.
