  1. Add ‘Em, Subtract ‘EmAlignment Lesson Day 94

  2. Warm Up Justin and Serena were sharing a pie. Justin thought they should cut the pie into 4 pieces and each get 2 pieces each. Serena argued that they should cut the pie into 8 pieces and each get 4. She said, “That way, we’ll each get more pie.” Justin said that it didn’t matter how they cut the pie. Who is correct? Why?

  3. Fraction Review • What is a fraction? • What does ½ of an apple mean? • What does 1/3 mean? • What does the numerator represent? • What does the denominator represent? • Where would I plot the ½ on the number line below? • Where would I plot ¼? • ¾? 1/4 ½ 3/4 0 1

  4. Pattern Block Fractions • If a yellow hexagon represents 1 whole… • How many red isosceles trapezoid does it take to make a whole? • What fraction of a whole is 1 red isosceles trapezoid? • What fraction of a whole is 2 red isosceles trapezoids? • Is 2/2 the same as 1 whole? • How many blue rhombus does it take to make a whole? • What fraction of a whole is 1 blue rhombi? • How many brown right trapezoids make a whole? • What fraction of a whole is 1 brown right trapezoid? • What fraction of a whole is 4 brown right trapezoids? • Is 4/4 the same as 1 whole? • How many green equilateral triangles? • What fraction of a whole is 1 green equilateral triangle? • How many purple right triangles? • What fraction of a whole is 1 purple right triangle? • What other fractions can you make using these pattern blocks?

  5. How much do I have in all if: 1 hexagon is a whole and I have 1 rhombus and 1 green triangle? • What fraction is represented by 1 rhombus? • What fraction is represented by 1 green triangle? • What number sentence is represented by this situation? • 1/3 + 1/6 = ? • Our denominators are not the same. Is there any trading I can do to make them the same? • What equation do we have now? Find Day 94, “Add ‘Em” in your notebook

  6. Add ‘Em • I have a red isosceles trapezoid and 2 green equilateral triangles. If a hexagon is one whole, what fraction do I have?

  7. Add ‘Em • I have a brown right trapezoid and 3 purple right triangles. If a hexagon is one whole, what fraction do I have?

  8. Add ‘Em • I have 2 red isosceles trapezoids and 2 brown right trapezoids. If a hexagon is one whole, what fraction do I have?

  9. Day 94, “Adding Fractions Using Pattern Blocks” • Gary had 2/3 of a pizza. Marly had 1/6 of a pizza. How much pizza did they have in all? How do you know? Write an equation and fill in the hexagon to show your work.

  10. Day 94, “Adding Fractions Using Pattern Blocks” • Molly had ¼ of a pizza. Her friend Abigail had ½ of a pizza. How much pizza did they have in all? How do you know? Write an equation and fill in the hexagon to show your work.

  11. Day 94, “Adding Fractions Using Pattern Blocks” • Chris had 4/12 of a pizza. Lance had ½ of a pizza. How much pizza did they have in all? How do you know? Write an equation and fill in the hexagon to show your work.

  12. Consider This…. • Look back at your solutions for these 3 problems. • Are your solutions reasonable? • Why can we not just simply add the fractions’ numerators and denominators ?

  13. Day 94, “Adding & Subtractions Fractions Page 1" • Jake had 3 purple triangles and Dion had 1/6 of a hexagon. How much of the hexagon will be filled if the boys combine their blocks? How do you know? Write an equation and fill in the hexagon to show your work. Is you answer reasonable?

  14. Day 94, “Adding & Subtractions Fractions Page 1" • Anthony had ¼ of a hexagon. His friend Andrea had one red isosceles trapezoid. How much of the hexagon will be filled if they combine their blocks? How do you know? Write an equation and fill in the hexagon to show your work. Is you answer reasonable?

  15. Day 94, “Adding & Subtractions Fractions Page 1" • Charlie had 8 purple triangles. Lorna had on brown right trapezoid. How much did they have in all? How do you know? Write an equation and fill in the hexagon to show your work. Is you answer reasonable?

  16. Day 94, “Adding & Subtractions Fractions Page 2" • Carol had 9/12 cups of milk in her measuring cup for the French toast she was cooking. She poured ½ cups into the pan. How much milk was still in the measuring cup? Explain your work with pictures, words, and an equation.

  17. Day 94, “Adding & Subtractions Fractions Page 2" • Catherine had 5/6 cups of chocolate chips to put in her cookies. She poured 1/3 cups into the pan. How many chocolate chips does Catherine have to snack on while her cookies are baking? Explain your work with pictures, words, and an equation.

  18. Day 94, “Adding & Subtractions Fractions Page 2" • Mallie had 10/12 cups of coconut for a pie. She used 2/6 cups of coconut. How many cups of coconut does Mallie have left for the next time she makes a pie?

  19. Homework Day 94, “How much do I have? – Homework”
