  2. Secret Rearmament of Germany • Already advanced by the time of Hitler’s rise to power • Concealed within a labyrinth of government agencies and military bureaus • Unknown by the Allied forces • Economic and militaristic in nature • To stimulate employment and industrial growth • To have military superiority 2

  3. Geneva May 1926 • Germany “wanted” universal disarmament and equality of arms • Germany’s secret rearmament was simultaneously happening during the Geneva Conference 3

  4. Germany’s Sticky Situation • Did not have enough arable land for their population • Three options • Intensive cultivations of already owned land • Attempt to reduce birthrate • Acquire more land (Hitler’s preference) • Hitler did not want to send immigrants across sea, he wanted to make space in eastern Europe and Western Russia by killing “inferior” races • These areas were occupied by the Slavs and Jews 4

  5. Germany’s Goals • Primary Goal: Destroy France • To control eastern territory • After destroying France, global competition with Britain and the U.S. • To acquire materials • Annexation of adjacent regions with German speaking individuals • Hitler didn’t care about individuals, just the pretext of conquering land 5

  6. Collapse of the European Security System • Germany left the Geneva Conference • Germany left the League of Nations • Germany formed an alliance with Poland to stop the tariff war between them • However, Poland had an alliance with France • Therefore, punched a hole in French alliance system 6
