  6. Anson Jones(1798-1858) Anson Jones was born in Massachusetts. At the age of 22, he became a doctor. In 1832 he didn’t want to be a doctor any more and moved to New Orleans to become a commission merchant.(one who sells or distributes something). In 1833, Jones moved to Texas and settled in Brazoria. Jones would come to support the Texas Independence movement. After Texas won its independence, Jones was elected to congress and wanted Texas to become a state in the United States. When Sam Houston became president of Texas, he appointed Jones as Secretary of State. Jones would become known as the “Architect of Annexation" because as president of Texas he allowed for Texas to become a state within the United States.

  7. Stephen Fuller Austin1793-1836 • Stephen F. Austin is called the Father of Texas. • Since Texas belonged to Mexico, Austin had to communicate with the Mexican government often, and because of this he became bilingual. • He founded the first United States colony in Texas when Texas was still part of Mexico. • By 1830 about 20,000 settlers from the United States lived in Texas. These settlers wanted independence from Mexico. • Austin went to Mexico to discuss this matter but the Mexican government sent him to jail for treason. (working against ones country). • Austin was released from jail by 1835 and served as commander of the Texas army. • Austin traveled to Washington to get the United States help in getting Texas’ freedom from Spain.

  8. Stephen Fuller Austin • By the time he made it back home to Texas in 1836, Texas had won its independence. • Austin ran for president but lost to Sam Houston. • Houston appointed Austin as Secretary of State.
