Dunkirk John George
From May 25, to May 28, 1940, over 330,000 British and French troops retreated to the Dunkirk coastline, where they were trapped and facing advancing German armored forces.
Since Allied forces were trapped on the coastline, and facing imminent death if they stayed…
Operation Dynamo was put into effect, drafting all ships, boats, and cruisers in the area to aid in the evacuation of Allied forces off the coastline.
All of the ships in the area that aided in the evacuation of allied forces were Destroyers, Cargo Boats, Fishing Boats, Cross Channel Ferries, Yachts, Motor Boats, Fire Floats, Tugs, Tugs towing boats, Lifeboats, Pleasure Steamers and Holiday Boats.
From May 27 until about June 4, 1940, these ordinary ships rescued about 212,000 British officers and soldiers, 113,000 [mainly] French troops, and about 13,000 wounded men.
In 1944, the Second Canadian Division beseiged German-occupied Dunkirk.
German units withstood the seige, and held Dunkirk from September 1944, when the seige started, until May 1945.
