Classroom vs. Competition Teacher Activity • Break into groups of five. • Each group will be given a copy of course standards and guidelines for one or more HOSA competitive events. • Your group should: • Choose your HOSA competitive event and an aligned Tennessee Standards for Literacy writing standard. • Identify the course content standard you want to teach/practice/reinforce. • Make applicable to all students based on your content in your class (how to customize). • For example, change the topic for the Prepared Speaking event or Public Service Announcement event to address a particular content standard you are working on. • Design and plan your project. Utilize classroom competition to prepare students for HOSA competitive events as well as reinforce literacy and course content standards. Using HOSA Activities to Support Standards

Next Steps • Familiarize yourself with the course standards of the courses you will be teaching. • Familiarize yourself with the TN Literacy Standards and how they can be used in your course. • Visit the HOSA Competitive Event Resources page on the national HOSA website to download individual events (.pdf format). • Determine which HOSA events in which you want your students to participate. • Use the rubrics of both Tennessee Standards for Literacy and HOSA events to plan your project.
