  1. Curriculum Night Ms. Smith’s Honors English Classes 0,1,3,5,6

  2. Welcome parents and Caretakers! • I am so excited to have you here! • I understand that you may have questions about your student specifically, while I am happy to answer specifics, please save them until the end of the presentation, or email me at smith.savanna@cusd80.com • Thank you in advance  • If you have any questions about specific information from the presentation, I will answer them. • This presentation will break down how I approach our standards based curriculum in your student’s English class. • My goal is to be as transparent as possible about what I do in the classroom so that you are aware at all times of your student’s learning and successes.

  3. Ms. smith • Bachelors degree from Grand Canyon University: • Secondary Education with an Emphasis in English • 4thyear at Casteel • Taught on-level and honors 8, 9, and 10. As well as AP Literature and Composition. • Classroom: J102 • What I teach and when: • 10thgrade Honors English: 0,1,3, 5,6 • AP Literature and Composition: 4 • Students and parents can meet with me after school

  4. Agenda: Over View of the day’s lesson • Leaning Target: Direct standard that the students are working on in class. • Announcements: Test dates, school wide events, reminders, etc. • Homework: Short and Long term due dates posted here, on my website, and on the white board. • Bell Work: Usually posed on this PowerPoint. • Activities: All things we’re doing in class that relate to standard. • Updated daily to my webpage. • Honors 10 is considered Pre-AP and is designed to prepare students for AP Language and Composition.

  5. Reading Lists & Text Books • Pearson myPerspectives textbooks • Standards based texts and questioning for a more advanced and rigorous curriculum. • Q1: Of Mice and Menby John Steinbeck • Q2: • Q3: • Q4: The Book Thief To be determined. • The school will provide a copy, however it is very beneficial to the student to have his/her own copy in order to annotate. Annotation is a powerful comprehension technique.

  6. Writing • We write critically every single day. • Bell Work: • Voice lessons: diction, details, imagery, syntax, and tone. • Essays: • analysis, argument, and explanatory will be our focus this year. • Beyond Literary Analysis: • Showing students how to write with passion and authority about texts. • Redefining what a text means. • Shifting from familiar structures to ones that are produced more realistically

  7. Independent Reading • Every quarter students will be asked to read a text outside of class. • It’s their responsibility to have it with them every day. • Students will get a regular day in class to complete a timed write where they synthesize information from their text and other texts that we’ve read in class. • The intent if this is to mirror what they will experience in their AP classes. • Each quarter the assignment will vary slightly, but the outcome will be the same – an analytical synthesis on a given topic.

  8. standards • Broken down in English in 4 distinct categories: • Reading: Literature and Informational Texts • Writing: Informative/Explanatory, Narrative, Research, Argument • Speaking and Listening: Conversational aspect • Language: Grammar and Vocabulary • Step-ladder from 1-3 to prove mastery in different categories. • A score of 4 proves that the student has mastered the content and can make more in depth inferences than what has been taught.

  9. Will change in the coming weeks to meet the needs of the students. 10th grade essential standards

  10. Infinite Campus Students are permitted to complete quiz corrections or redo assignments for an improved grade. • Summative 60%: • Mastery of the entire standard. • End of novel test / Entirety of an essay / Final Project • Formative 40%: • Part of a standard • Quiz on one chapter / thesis statement of essay / one grammatical concept. • T: Turned in and completed / I: incomplete / M: Missing • Most of the time these assignments will be scores out of 0 points. • Sometimes the score reflects the status of an assignment before being graded. • Notebook checks will be common. • Students earn the grades that they receive through hard work and improvement. • Missing assignments result in a zero and students have two weeks from the date that it was due to receive credit for turning it in. • Late policy: every day an assignment is late the assignment will be deducted 10% from the earned score.

  11. Absences • ALWAYS check Ms. Smith’s Website: • http://cusd80.com/Domain/8255 • Missed Quiz/test - Schedule a time with Ms. Smith to take the assessment. After school/during conference that week is preferable. • As per CCHS student handbook: • Students will not be able to make up any work if they have an unexcused absence. They will get a “0” for those assignments. • Be mindful that missing a block day is like missing 2 days of school, so it is imperative that they are here at those times. • It is the student’s responsibility to follow up on all missing work. • Encourage them to be their own advocates.

  12. Vocabulary • Connotation versus denotation • Sadlier Level E for 10th grade • 20 words to utilize in their writing and every day speech. • Use vocabulary in isolation (bell work, sentences/grammar assignments). • Use the words in free writes where they explore their creativity. • In timed writing literary analysis of a text that we are reading.

  13. My Requests For Parents • Parent & Teacher Team Work- Let’s team up to ensure your child’s success! • Check website and student grades frequently • Encourage your student to be a self-advocate • Please don’t text or call your child during the school day. • Contact office in case of emergency. • Please be mindful of attendance. Block day absences deny your child two full days of learning.

  14. Continuous Contact • CUSD Website: https://www.cusd80.com/Domain/8255 • Updated every day by 3:00 pm. • Weekly Letters • Under class tab. • This will outline what we did that week, and what I have planned for next week. • Email me at smith.savanna@cusd80.com. • I try to get back within 1 day. • School number: (480) 424-8100. Office staff will notify me and get you through to my room directly.
