  1. Shallow Brook andSpring Forge Working Towards Consistency The Bobcat Way: 100% of our students will graduate and be fully prepared for a post-secondary education.

  2. Unique Intermediate Challenges Shallow Brook and Spring Forge have a shared attendance. Students who are neighbors may attend different intermediates SB & SF have students from both schools riding the same buses Scheduling: requests from families, student needs (LS, ES, ELL), balanced caseloads for LS, new enrollments and class sizes Transition from K-3 to intermediates: Intermediate principals meet with LS grade 3 teachers and principals, 3rd graders tour SB/SF in spring, guidance counselors visit 3rd grade students and meet with counselors – summer correspondence

Questions from the community… • Why do students at SBI get to switch classes while SFI students are self-contained? • Why does SFI have fitness recess and a game room but SBI does not? • Why does (substitute either school name) have a dress down day today and we don’t? • Why are the school-wide positive behavior systems different (CATS and TRACKS)? • Why aren’t SFI/SBI giving the same assessments? • Why are the structures for the PTO/CLT different in each building?

Why Now? • As of January 1, 2013 PDE has moved grades 4-8 to middle level certification with a concentration area • PA Core curriculum that teachers must master and make sure each child learns, is becoming more complex. Teachers must have mastery of content and a wealth of instructional strategies in order meet each child’s needs • NEMS is seeing students come in with background knowledge that is specific to the intermediate building that they have attended

  5. Responses implemented in 14-15 Grades 4, 5, 6 will consist of two person teaching teams. One teacher will teach math, science, and social studies and the other will teach ELA all aligned to PACC. There will be an integration of science and social studies into ELA. Common assessments will be created and shared among teachers at each grade level and in both buildings to insure students are receiving the same curriculum within the given timeframes. Common building schedules: consistent time allotments for core subjects, specials, lunches, PBR Professional Development: Meeting jointly as SF/SB departments throughout the year during early dismissals and staff meetings to work on common assessments, instructional strategies, etc. Fundraising – common for many things; may fall at different times: (Yankee Candle, Stride for SBI/Relay for Learning)

  6. Student & Community Involvement There will be a student council at each building and they will work together to plan special days & events (e.g. dress up/down days) SBI has implemented TRACKS. This includes the implementation of a positive behavior daily recess with access to a game room each cycle. We have introduced this through a school-wide assembly, staff training, and a video Fitness recess has proven to be successful at SFI. SBI has implemented it Parent organizations will meet together bi-monthly. Each meeting will consists of a brief presentation by principals, time to meet as building committees, then a coming together as a whole to address any upcoming topics that effect both buildings (Nov. 17 @ 5:30 is next joint meeting)

  7. Monitoring Progress Mrs. Wolff and Ms. Walker will continue to meet bi-monthly to track alignment and plan opportunities to bring the intermediate communities together. Both intermediates have met with academic success as measured by the state assessments (PSSA). Together we can insure a common and excellent experience for each of our intermediate students, lay a common and strong foundation for middle school and beyond, and continue to achieve at high levels.
