Today’s Goals and Activities • Present an overview of the final essay. • Discuss the emergence of the term “Asian American” by comparing and contrasting different Asian American groups and analyzing a video on the murder of Vincent Chin.
Final Essay • Significantly scaled back/modified assignment. • Due Thursday, December 13th at 5 PM via email: james.fabionar@saclink.csus.edu • Assignments 2b, 2c and a brief essay will count as your final paper for this class. • The brief final essay will be about three pages in length.

Final Essay • You will be given a choice of three thesis statements of racial and ethnic inequality based on key concepts from Part I of the course (culture, structure, power, and identity). • You will briefly explain how the within and across-group analyses you wrote in Assignments 2b and 2c supports one of these thesis statements. • Example: Inequality is produced and maintained by ideologies that represent the racialized other as culturally uncivilized.

Emergence of “Asian American” • The term “Asian,” like the term “Black,” means different things in different places around the world. • In the United States, “Asian American” is primarily a political term that reflects a panethnic experience. • Many Asian Americans identify themselves first with the the nation of ancestry. Some do not identify with the term Asian American.
Murder of Vincent Chin • Michigan in the 1980s: • High tensions between white and Japanese auto workers. • On the eve of his wedding, Vincent Chin, a Chinese American, was brutally beaten and left to die. He was mistaken for a Japanese American. • This event resonated with groups of Asian decent around the country and is often viewed as the defining moment in Asian American political engagement.
