HOW TO START Starting can be difficult- What would be a good sentence to start off with for a sexual history? “I hope you don’t mind but I need to take a few minutes to ask you some personal questions about your sexual history which are relevant to your problem. Obviously anything we discuss will remain confidential.”
ASK OPEN QUESTION • How can I help? • Details of presenting problem • Time scale of the problem • Anything that happened to start this problem
DIRECT QUESTIONS! TALKING ABOUT SEXUAL PARTNERS • Do you have a sexual partner at the moment? • How long have you been with your partner? • Are they male or female or involved with both? • When did you last have a partner other than that one?
SEXUAL PRACTICES It may be relevant to ask about specific sexual acts: ORAL SEX: Risk of Herpes virus, Hep B, Gonorrhoea can all be transmitted oro-genitally. • ORAL-ANAL: Risk of Giardiasis. • ANAL SEX OR VAGINAL: Risk of HIV. • HOW TO ASK: I am going to ask more detail about the kind of sex you have been having so I can understand what tests we might need to do.
PROTECTION ASK DIRECT • What do you do to protect yourself against STD or HIV? If not using protection ask why? Advise importance.
PAST HISTORY OF STD • Have you ever had an STD? • If so what was the infection and when was it? • Also important to ask if their partner ever had STD.
QUESTIONS TO IDENTIFY HIV OR HEPATITIS RISK • Have you or any of your partners ever injected drugs? • Have you or your partner ever had sex with prostitutes • Have you had the Hepatitis jabs • Have you ever been tested for HIV
FINISHING UP • Is there anything else you would like to tell me you feel I may have missed out. • Thank the patient for their honesty!
