Types of Government Chapter 1, Section 3
Major Types of Government • Thinking comes from Aristotle • Who governs the state? • Autocracy – rule by one person • Oligarchy – rule by a few people • Democracy – rule by many persons
Autocracy • Rule by a single individual • Oldest and most common form • Maintained by inheritance or military power • Multiple Forms: • Totalitarian Dictatorship • Monarchy • Absolute • Constitutional
Oligarchy • Small group holds power • Power comes from wealth, military, social position (sometimes religion) • Modern day examples? (DPRK) • These governments might claim that they are ruled by the people, or try to appear like they are • Rigged Elections
Democracy • Any system of government in which rule is by the people • Direct Democracy • Some towns in New England • Also Initiatives • Representative Democracy • We elect people to a legislature • Republic • Voters are the source of government authority
Anarchy! • Nobody is in control (or everybody is) depending on how you look at it! • Human state of existence before government existed • Similar to how animals live in the wild (everyone looks out for themselves)
