  1. Art:The Ultimate Reflection of Culture By: Leland Bond Dianne Kaiyoorawongs And Melody Mishkin A brief overview of music, paintings, literature, documentaries and graffitti stemming from and inspired by the US Civil Rights movement and the Anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa.

  2. Music Inspired by the US Civil Rights Movement The joining together of artists such as Bob Dylan, Peter Paul and Mary, Pete Seeger and many other musicians during a trying time of our country’s history showed that unity can stand strong. Joan Baez joined Martin Luther King Jr. on stage at his March at Washington in 1963 singing “Oh Freedom”. Bob Dylan was famous for his protest songs in the 1960s including examples such as “Blowin’ In the Wind” or his entire album “The Times Are A-Changin’”.

  3. More Music Artists such as Nat King Cole and Chuck Berry helped influence and bring together styles of music and giving an outlet for people during this time period.

  4. Anti-Apartheid Inspired Music Dan Heymann originally wrote the song “Weeping” in the mid- 1980s while he was a drafted soldier into the South African army. This was a few years before the Anti-Apartheid movement was dismantled. http://www.playlist.com/user/35371529/dashboard

Amandla: A Revoultion in Four-Part Harmony A documentary made of interviews, performances, and historical film footage It is an artists voice of how history evolved in the times before, during and after the apartheid movement and their fight in a peaceful way. "The apartheid government took everything away from people, but it couldn’t stop them from singing", says Hirsch.

  6. Eyes on the Prize: U.S. Documentary Series This, like Amandla, includes content from both major events and at a “grass-roots” level. It was a 14 part documentary intended to educate the next generation on the civil rights movement in its entirety between 1954 through 1985.

  7. Sculpture Sculpture of MLK in Atlanta. A sculpture by Nath Amar Sehgal with a plaque under it expressing the support of the United Nations disapproval of the apartheid movement in South African and the release of Nelson Mendela. Both focus on one black man without an incredible amount of details on their facial features. Both reflect the styles of the country they were produced in but are universal in how they can relate to everyone.

  8. Paintings Obviously both the paintings represent peaceful coming together of all people, races, religions, and walks of life.

  9. Art of the Everyday People Graffitti This is, obviously, a mural of the civil rights activist, Martin Luther King Jr. It is in France and obviously shows the world wide effect of his efforts. Paintings by an unidentified artist on an apartment building, near a park, in South Africa.

"I have one great fear in my heart, that one day when they are turned to loving, they will find we are turned to hating."
