  7. Discovery • Explorer Henry Hudson is credited with the discovery of Cape May and its surrounding area 400 years ago. • Cape May is named for Dutchman Captain Cornelius Jacobsen Mey.

  8. Formation of County Government • The first records of settlement and government appear in Burlington Court Records in 1685. • Daniel Coxe • Cape May County was formally created on November 12, 1692 by an Act of the General Assembly of the Province of West Jersey.

Other Early Legislative Acts 1693 – Court for small causes 1694 – Five representatives 1697 – Powers enlarged 1697 – Road to Burlington 1699 – Three representatives 1701 – Five representatives (again) 1693 – The Cape May County Court for the trial of small causes erected 1694 – Cape May County empowered to elect five representatives

  12. Freeholders and Justices • In 1713 and 1714 the county board of justices and freeholders were organized. • February 13, 1798 the New Jersey Legislature formed the Boards of Chosen Freeholders in the more formal centralized structure we know in New Jersey today “a body politic and corporate in law.”

  13. Division of Local Governments • In April 1723 at a Quarterly Session of the County Court the County was divided into three precincts coinciding with religious lines: • Upper Precinct – Quaker • Middle Precinct – Baptist • Lower Precinct – Presbyterian • On February 21, 1798 an Act of the Legislature formed the Townships: • Upper Township • Middle Township • Lower Township
