Reviewing The A.D. 70 Doctrine The Prophecy Of The End Of All Things
Its Identifying Terms • Formal name is “Realized Eschatology” • Eschatology = study of last things, end times • Realized = has already been accomplished • All things re: the end of time (2nd coming, the resurrection, the judgment, etc.) has already taken place
Its Identifying Terms • Common name is “A.D. 70 Doctrine” • All Biblical prophecy and teaching was “realized” or accomplished when Jerusalem was destroyed in A.D. 70 • Sometimes called the “Max King Theory” • Author of the book The Spirit Of Prophecy (1971, rev. 2002) 4
Its Main Beliefs • 1st century Judaism was “smothering” the church in oppression, persecution by Jewish dominance in Jerusalem • We agree…read Acts 8-9 • God sent the Romans to destroy Jerusalem in A.D. 70 to “free” the church
Its Main Beliefs • A.D. 70 advocates claim this was the “real” beginning of the N.T. church • To keep their doctrine from being rejected automatically, A.D. 70 advocates must “redefine” N.T. words & concepts • One of their primary texts ÙMt 24:3, 29-30
Its Main Beliefs • 5 of their major targeted areas… The Kingdom • Not fully set up (established) until A.D. 70 • It did begin on Pentecost (Acts 2), but not with “power & glory” [their distinction] • Was it incomplete for these 40 years??
Its Main Beliefs • 5 of their major targeted areas… The 2nd Coming • Every Biblical mention of the Lord’s return was “figuratively” fulfilled in A.D. 70 • Christ came, but not “visibly”…He came “figuratively” to “spiritually” judge Judaism
Its Main Beliefs • 5 of their major targeted areas… The Resurrection • Connected to previous point [2nd Coming] • The resurrection was “figurative,” not “literal” • The resurrection has already happened • What, then was raised?
Its Main Beliefs • 5 of their major targeted areas… The Resurrection • It was the church that was “raised” from the destruction of Judaism in A.D. 70 • This is the “body” mentioned in resurrection passages…the “spiritual body” [the church]
Its Main Beliefs • 5 of their major targeted areas… The Resurrection • Refuted by 1 Cor 15:1-8, 12-20, 35, 37, 42 Jn 5:25-29 • Passages teach a “literal bodily” resurrection • Where is the church referenced?
Its Main Beliefs • 5 of their major targeted areas… The Resurrection • Refuted by 1 Cor 15:1-8, 12-20, 35, 37, 42 Jn 5:25-29 • If Christ came in A.D. 70, when will the events discussed here take place?
Its Main Beliefs • 5 of their major targeted areas… The Judgment • It has already taken place • Did Jesus foretell of a “judgment” in Mt 24? • YES…was it the “final” judgment spoken of so often in the Scripture? NO
Its Main Beliefs • 5 of their major targeted areas… The Judgment • We read numerous references re: “judgment” in the Scripture Eccl 12:13-14 Mt 12:36, 41-42 Mt 25:31-46 Rom 14:10 2 Cor 5:10 Heb 9:27 2 Tim 4:8 • Who will be at the final judgment? EVERYONE
Its Main Beliefs • 5 of their major targeted areas… The Judgment • Was everyone judged at Jerusalem in A.D. 70? • Re: the previous point [Resurrection]… • Were all the graves opened in Jerusalem in A.D. 70?
Its Main Beliefs • 5 of their major targeted areas… The End Of Time • It is “figurative”…the end of the Jewish system • Not the literal end of the world • This totally nullifies what the N.T. teaches re: the end of life as we know it on earth
Its Main Beliefs • 5 of their major targeted areas… The End Of Time • Refuted by 2 Pet 3:4, 10-12 Rev 20:12 • How will eternity begin if this doctrine is true? • When will the events Peter mentions happen? • Will it require “another coming?” [3rd one]
Other Problems • Partaking of the Lord’s Supper • Not to be eaten until after the Lord comes into His kingdom Mt 26:26-29 • Not before A.D. 70 according to this doctrine • Only to be eaten “…till He come” 1 Cor 11:26 • Not after A.D. 70 according to this doctrine • When, therefore, can saints eat it??
Other Problems • Comfort & hope provided • The doctrine of Christ gives “hope” and “comfort” Rom 15:4 1 Thess 4:18 • If one believes this doctrine, what “benefit” does he have…where is his “hope?” • If everything has already happened, what is provided for the believer?
Other Problems • Comfort & hope provided • Consider the doctrines of “Faith Only” and “Once Saved, Always Saved” • Though false, we can understand and see the “comfort” & “hope” of those who believe them • There is NO hope for those of us living after A.D. 70 if this doctrine is true
Some Closing Thoughts… • There is so much more than could be presented…entire doctrine is complex • We have shown enough “basics” to know this is not the N.T. doctrine of Christ • This doctrine makes the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70 the Bible’s focal point
Some Closing Thoughts… • The focal point is the cross of Christ and the start of His kingdom Acts 2[A.D. 30] • First prophesied in Gen 3:15 • Redemption, power & glory in Jerusalem re: the Christ’s D/B/R & the start of His kingdom • It is not found in Jerusalem when it was destroyed by the Romans in A.D. 70
Some Closing Thoughts… • Four of the five events we’ve studied have not happened [the kingdom is here] • They will take place, assured by God’s word • The only question…will you & I be ready?? • Re: this particular doctrine… 2 Tim 2:15-18 • A “cancerous message that overthrows faith”
Some Closing Thoughts… • Don’t be troubled or deceived at “missing” the 2nd coming of the Lord 2 Thess 2:1-3a • It hasn’t happened yet • There will not be any way for anyone to miss that great day!!
