  1. States of matter By: Drew Harris

  2. Matter What is matter? Matter is everything in the universe that takes up space. Matter has mass. Mass is the amount of matter something has. A large, heavy object has more mass than a small, lightweight object. All matter is made up of small bits called particles. Each arrangement is called a state of matter. There are three states matter can be in.

  3. Solids, liquids, and gases • http://cleanvideosearch.com/media/action/yt/watch?videoId=HAPc6JH85pM

  4. Gas What is gas? Gas is the first state of matter. It is matter that has no definite shape and takes up no definite amount of space. A gas always fills the container it is in. If the container is open, the gas particles move out. Particles in gases do not stay close together. When you melt an ice cube, it turns into a liquid, and then if you continue the heat, it turns into a gas called water vapor.

  5. Solids What is a solid? A solid is matter that has a definite shape and takes up a definite amount of space. The particles in a solid are close together in a regular pattern.

  6. liquids What is a liquid? A liquid is matter that takes shape of its container and takes up a definite amount of space. When matter is a liquid, its particles slip and slide around each other. As the particles in a liquid move, they bump into the walls of their container. The particles of the liquid can’t move past the walls, and the liquid particles stay close together. So, the liquid takes the shape of its container.

  7. Vocabulary • Matter- everything in the universe that has mass and takes up space • Gas- the state of matter that has no definite shape and no definite amount of space • Liquid- the state of matter that takes the shape of its container and takes up a definite amount of space • Solid- the state of matter that has a definite shape and takes up a definite amount of space • Mass- the amount of matter that something contains

  8. Review • 1. What are the three states of matter? • 2. What is the state of matter that keeps its shape? • 3. What two states of matter take the shape of their containers? • 4. What do you take away to change a liquid to a solid? • 5. Freezing water can change a liquid to a _____?
