Shade Screens Windows account for nearly 50% of the heat that enters your home. Installing shade screens on your east-, west- and south-facing windows will help you stay cool and comfortable. Shade screens on sun-struck windows can: Reduce heat gain by up to 50% Lower your cooling costs by up to 25%
Compact Florescent Bulbs CFLs use up to 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs. According to ENERGY STAR, if every home in America replaced just one incandescent light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified CRL, in one year it would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes. That would prevent the release of greenhouse gas emission equal to that of about 800,000 cars.
Energy Efficient AC Unit This device is the largest energy user in Arizona homes. By replacing your old AC unit with an energy efficient AC unit with a SEER rating of at least 12, you can qualify for local and federal rebates AND save tons of energy at the same time!
Properly Installed AC Ducts Steep corners and leaks in poorly installed AC Ducts can cause huge loses of cool air which is a waste of energy. In fact, the average house looses 25% of their AC cooling to leaks! Making sure AC ducts are properly installed and maintained can save energy.
Kill-a-Watt Meter This device will help you monitor your Kw usage which can help you determine which appliances in your home are “vampire appliances” which use more energy than you think (some use energy even when they are turned off).
EnergyGuide Label This label will help you gauge how much energy the appliance uses on an average yearly basis. Save energy by buying appliances that have a lower than average EnergyGuide rating.
Programmable Thermostat Using a programmable thermostat can make manipulating the temperature of your home easy and automatic. Setting your home temperature up in summer or down in winter a few degrees when you are not home will save on energy use and costs.
Power Strip Plugging appliances into a power strip can save energy because it makes it easy to turn all appliances off at once. Computers, printers, internet modems etc all stay on (at least a little light on the front etc) all the time unless you unplug them. Instead of unplugging every device every time, use a power strip and turn off the power strip during periods of non-use (night time, while away etc).
Lady Bug Do you let the water run when it’s getting hot? This “Lady Bug” is installed in between your shower head and the pipe that connects it to the water source, and helps to reduce the amount of water lost by shutting the shower off when the water is warm. Then, when you are ready to get in, you pull the cord to turn the shower back on. This saves water AND the heat energy lost when hot water goes down the drain.
