  1. Promoting Quality Improvement in Coffee in the Eastern African Region:The Role of EAFCA Frederick S.M. KAWUMA

  2. EAFCA Vision The Vision of EAFCA is to enhance the quality, competitiveness and profitability of the Eastern African Coffees in global markets, thereby improving the well being of the producer and ensuring consumer satisfaction

  3. Goal Increasing the value and volume in the chain of specialty coffee exports from the Eastern Africa region, while also promoting increased domestic consumption.

  4. Challenges of Eastern Africa Fine Coffees • There has been a lack of institutional arrangement to address the issues affecting specialty coffees • There has been no cohesive regional strategy to address the regional nature of problems of coffee producers in Eastern Africa • Lack of supporting policies & poor information flow • Lack of quality/specialty coffee orientation among producers • Lack of coordination with research institutions and lack of appropriate technology transfer

  5. EAFCA Position in Global Specialty Coffee Exports • Total Coffee Exports from the eight EAFCA countries are around 6 million bags which is 50% of all exports from Africa. • The eight EAFCA countries export 98% of all African specialty coffees! • Of this, specialty coffee accounts for 1.2 million bags, with Ethiopia and Kenya accounting for over 80% while the rest is shared between Burundi, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

  6. What Could that Mean for EAFCA Countries? • Great Opportunities: It is estimated that by 2005 specialty coffee will be 15.3 million bags (18% of the world coffee market) increasing by about 7 million bags over a 5 year period. • EAFCA exports of 1.2 million bags could grow to 2.2 million bags if EAFCA countries retain 15% of specialty coffee market. • If EAFCA captures 20% of the market, it means 3.06 million bags (about 2.5 times current levels)
