The Seven Churches of Asia Philadelphia: “The Church with an Open Door”
Philadelphia Albert Barnes notes, “The country, as viewed from these hills, is extremely magnificent—gardens and vineyards lying at the back and sides of the town, and before it one of the most beautiful and extensive plains of Asia.” Barnes, Albert, Barnes on the New Testament, “Revelation” Vol. 11, p. 92.

The Text “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write, 'These things says He who is holy, He who is true, He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens.’" Revelation 3:7
The Text “I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name." Revelation 3:8

Brotherly Love • A walled city 28 miles southwest of Sardis. • Famous for wines—the city’s coins displayed an image of the “god of wine.” • Near the greatest highway in the world—the highway from Europe to the Eastern gateway.
Brotherly Love • Youngest of the seven cities cited • Most favorable for commercial and strategic purposes • “Missionary city”—founded to spread Greek language and culture • Center of much heathen worship • Many temples to heathen gods—”Little Athens”
Fleeing Philadelphia • In A.D. 17, Philadelphia was leveled by an earthquake; the city was built on a fault line. "Philadelphia has no trustworthy walls, but daily in one direction or another they keep tottering and falling apart”(Strabo, c. 63 BC - c.21 AD) • Jesus probably alludes to the history of fleeing out of the city for safety (3:12)
Philadelphia (New Names) • The city had a history of name changes. • In gratitude for the aid given by Tiberius Caesar, the citizens changed the name of the city to “Neoceasarea” • It was then called, “Philadelphia Flavia” during the reign of Vespasian (69-79 A.D.)

Opens and Shuts • Has authority to include and to exclude. • The Lord adds—Acts 2:47 • He also opens—John 8:24 • The door that no one can shut—John 14:6 • Has the keys to death and Hades—Revelation 1:18
Words of Commendation • “Thou hast a little strength.” • It’s not how much we have; it’s what we do with it. • Small in men’s sight—powerful in God’s. • Limited resources— not limited output! • Isaiah 40:29 “He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength.”
Words of Commendation • “You have kept my word.” • Definite act in times past • No words of condemnation offered—faithful in their work! • Psalm 119:11 “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You!”

Rewards for Faithfulness • “I have set before you an open door—no one can shut.” • Instead of spreading culture—the gospel. • 2 Peter 1:10,11 “For so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
