Summit Ink April 4, 2012 Issue 12 Easter basket extravaganza weaves into the Summit Academy art rooms Anthony Hughes, News Editor Easter is right around the corner and everyone seems to have “spring fever”. Some of the students here at Summit Academy are showing their spring spirit by making Easter baskets in their Art II classes. A few days ago, I had the privilege of sitting down with on e of the art students from this class and our art teacher, Mrs. Newbrough. I first asked Mrs. Newbrough what materials were used to make the Easter baskets. She replied, “We used plastic color coated copper wire similar to what is inside telephone wire.” I then asked how the baskets were created. Mrs. Newbrough responded, “We started as a group and went step by step to get started, then once we got started, students were able to work independently using a half hitch knot to create the wire basket.” Now for my final question to Mrs. Newbrough, I asked her if any other classes from this year or in past years had ever created the Easter baskets. Mrs. Newbrough responded, “This was the first time that we had ever made the Easter baskets.” Then, I sat down and talked with sophomore student, Ausanae Cameron. I first asked her what her thoughts were on the Easter basket project. Ausanae responded, “I liked it because I learned something new and it was creative.” I then asked Ausanae how long it took the class to make the baskets. According to Ausanae, “It took us about a week.” If anyone would like to see the baskets, they are more then welcome to visit the art room. Bowling was quite fun this year and the students that attended enjoyed themselves. When I asked Dehavlynn if she had fun, she screamed, “Yeaaaa!” I then asked Dehavlynn if she played any games in the arcade at the bowling alley. Dehavlynn said, “Yes, I played Little or Nothing, which is a game where you can win an Ipod. Dehavlynn was excited to admit that she did win a bowling game. Her score was a one-hundred and two. She feels she won, because eveyone else’s heads were not in the game. Dehavlynn also said that the bowling monthly incentive was a good idea, because everyone she talked to had fun. There was a lot of good food and drinks available at Camelot Lanes I asked Danielle Kliene what she did when all the students were having fun at bowling, and she responded, “ I tried to sleep because the shows that were on were boring.” I think next incentive she will make sure she has her one-hundred Knight Bucks. 2. 2 Opinion Page The Chronicles of the Jelly Fisher Cameron’s Corner Ausanae Cameron, Opinion Editor Ryan Fisher, Opinion Editor Would you want this done to you ? How would you feel if you were being bullied ? What would you do ? In my opinion, people should appreciate what they have instead of what they want. There are people who have nothing who would die for the stuff they have. Everyday, I go downtown and I see a man under the bridge laying on concrete, because he does not have a home to go to. There are some students in our school who sit around and talk about everybody. These people don’t know what others go through at home or why they are the way they are . I was always told ‘’ Watch what you say, because it might just turn around on you.’’ I look at those kids who are being picked on, and it is not right. It is called bullying. This is a school; we should be able to come to school, get our education and go home. Its okay not to like someone, but everyone should still be treated with the respect you would want from them. There are so many followers in our school. People say they are not afraid, but yet they are afraid to be their selves . If people would just see how they act, they would see how ignorant they look. Just remember before you talk about someone, think about how you would feel if it was you or your family members. Respect is not something you just give or receive. You have to earn it what you give is what you get . Spring break is coming up and its time to get out. Why stay in the house all day when you could be having fun somewhere else? We are inside most of the time because we have school, but we are about to have a week off from it. Here is our chance to have some fun. I know I will be outside almost all of spring break. I will definitely be out on nice, hot, sunny days. Spring break will be here and gone faster then you think. Therefore, get up, get out, and get active because spring break only lasts a week. What will you do over spring break? There is so much you can do in a week of free time during spring. You can go on vacation, take a road trip, go over friends, play some sports, go camping, etc. The best thing you can do is go outside, get active, and get some sun because we all need some tans. On a hot day during the week of spring break, I would go to the beach. The beach is a hot spot for people on a hot day. It’s a place you can do almost anything. When I go to the beach, I play football, basketball, go swimming, cook out, have a barbeque, get connected with people and always try to meet someone new. There is so much to do and so little time to do it. Spring break only comes once a school year, why waste the chance to have some fun? No one better come back to school and say that there break was lame or boring because it was your choice to do whatever you did. If you did not pick a fun enough thing to do, then something is wrong with you, because there are so many fun things you could have done! Do not waste time indoors when you can be outside having fun! Profile Page 3 Mrs. Lunger Freeman Dobyne Brion Koenig, Photographer & Profile Editor CeVon McMullen, Student Liason I just sat down with another senior, Freeman Dobynne to get a better view on him and how he is outside and inside school. Freeman is a senior, and he is on way to bigger and better things in his life like college. He plans on going to Youngstown State University, but if he had the ability to choose any college, he would choose to go to Ohio State University. He also wants to go to school to be a barber. Mrs. Newbrough stated, “Freeman is very good artist and I think this would be a good avenue for Freeman to take in his life.” I think Freeman would be a very good artist. Mr. Hart stated, “ I have not had Freeman in class for a couple of years, but if I had to say something nice about him, I would say he is one of the snazziest dressed students I have ever had.” Ausanae thinks, “Freeman is a funny person and he is also a good friend.” Then, we got to see the fun side of Freeman. Freeman is on of the biggest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fans. He also likes the Incredible Hulk. Then, I asked if he was to bring three things to a island, what would they be. He said “I would bring a few of my friends , some food, water and my cell phone so I could call for help.” Obviously, Free is quite practical. I have known Freeman for five years now and one thing that I can say is that he is one of my closest friends. Even though we have had our disagreements, we always find a way to get over them and still be friends . summit Academy is giving a warm welcome to one of our newest teachers, Mrs. Lunger. Recently, I sat down with Mrs. Lunger and asked her what she likes and thinks about Summit Academy. My first question for Mrs. Lunger was why she decided to join Summit Academy. Well, according to Mrs. Lunger she had received a call from Mr. Pallante, our principal asking her to join the staff. Next, I asked what she likes best about Summit Academy, and her response was “Everyone is friendly and I am never bored.” With that said, I then asked Mrs. Lunger about how many years has she been teaching. Mrs. Lunger’s response was, “I have been teaching for eighteen years; I first went to M.V.N.U in Mount Vernon, Ohio and transferred to Youngstown State University and graduated from Youngstown State University.” Out of curiosity, I threw in a few questions of my own. I asked Mrs. Lunger if she had a family or children of her own and what she likes to do outside of school. According to Mrs. Lunger, “I have three children, two sons and one daughter and I like to watch them play sports.” “Outside of school, I like to read and my favorite television show is NCIS,” she said. With that said, I asked Mrs. Lunger if she could have any super powers what would they be. Mrs. Lunger’s response was, “I would like to have the ability to always give the right answer.” To wrap up my interview with Mrs. Lunger, I asked why she decided to become a teacher and what were her spring break plans were. Her response was, “When I was little, I had a desire to become a teacher because I was not good in math; I also enjoy being with kids.” “Over spring break I plan to just relax and get some cleaning done around the house,” she said. Well there you have it. It looks like Mrs. Lunger is enjoying being a teacher here at Summit Academy. We are very lucky to have her with us.

4. 4 Hawaiian themed dance hits Summit Academy Keegan Caban, Entertainment Editor The Luau incentive is coming up here at the end of April. The incentive itself will be April 27th. The time of the Luau will be at 2:00 pm in the afternoon. I recently sat down with Mrs. Dory to ask her about more information on the dance. She informed me that, “Games will be first, followed by the dance music, student’s choice.” According to Mrs. Dory, there will be many extras given out at the dance. “Leis to wear, flowers to wear, and Hawaiian decorations will all be present,” Mrs. Dory said in regards to the Luau decorations and extras. It should definitely be a pretty long dance. “The dance will be an hour and fifteen minutes long,” Mrs. Dory said. In closing, I asked her about the snacks that will be provided. She said,, “The types of snacks at the Luau will be fruit skewers, punch, cupcakes and cookies.” All in all, it should prove to be a grand time. Mr. Laney says, “Bowling was great; everyone had a good time, but the only problem was that we only played one game, because we didn’t have enough time to play more game.” Mr. Laney also wanted to disclose so very important information. “For the record I beat Mrs. Vaupel by 6 points, and Ms. Davis beat me by 35 points; it was very disappointing, soon I will challenge Ms. Davis on the lanes and see if she is the real deal.” Matthew Hipple’s favorite part of bowling was the color of the bowling balls. When Jonathan Stewart was asked what was his favorite part of bowling was, he said, “Bowling with friends”. Teshira Tarver favorite part of bowling was nothing because she says, “I didn’t have fun.” Ce’von McMullen said, “It was cool, because I got out of school and had fun with my friends.” Mrs. Perkins was also asked what was her favorite part about the bowling incentive was, and she said, “It was a great atmosphere and everyone enjoyed their selves.” Mr. Logston said, “Seeing kids have a good time and lots of fun was his favorite part of the bowling incentive.” All in all, a good time was had by all who went! Sharing Easter traditions from land down under Ausanae Cameron, Opinion Editor 5 Every year for Easter, my family usually goes to church and comes home for Easter dinner with the family to enjoy each others’ company. I decided to see what Easter traditions are like around the world. The one I was most interested in was Australian Easter. It is celebrated differently; they celebrate Easter for fifty days with different celebrations each day. For example, they have a pancake race, they play egg- hunt and host Easter shows like “ The Easter Royal Show.” This show seemed really interesting to me; it has different farm animals. They also display fireworks, host parades , enjoy joy rides, serve food and offer several activities for the kids . Their favorite game to play for Easter is egg knocking. They do not call the Easter bunny the same thing we do, either. Their name for it is Easter Bilby. The Easter bunny has been replaced there, because it destroyed too many crops. As you know, our Easter occurs during the springtime. Their Easter is in autumn. It may seem like it’s all fun, but they do celebrate Christ. They celebrate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It is considered to be a day of mourning. It ends on the Easter Monday, which marks the reincarnation of Jesus I found Australia’s Easter celebration to be very interesting. I didn’t think they would change the Easter bunny into a rodent. Celebrating Easter for fifty days is something that really makes me interested in their customs. I wanted to know what they did for fifty days of celebrating Easter. I enjoyed looking into to this holiday. Happy Easter to everyone! Enjoy your break ! Destination Imagination teams performs way to first place finish; state bound! Ryan Fisher, Opinion Editor Summit Secondary’s very own Destination Imagination placed first at the March 17th competition at Youngstown State University. In earning first place, the team has now qualified for the state competition in Columbus, Ohio. On Friday, April 20th, the Summit Destination Imagination team will depart after lunch to Columbus, Ohio to compete in the state competition. The entire DI teams seems very exciting about this state competition. Senior, Jalen Mason said, “I am very anxious to go; I think we have a good shot at States.” Senior, Charmonique North shares Jalen’s confidence. “I was so surprised and excited that we qualified for State’s,” she said. When asked if she thought their team could do well at state, Charmonique responded by saying, “Anything is possible.” Senior Jonta Lafontaine claims that he was not all that surprised that they made it to the State competition. “It was pretty easy with all of the practice,” Jonta said. When asked if he thought they could win state, he later added, “We will do our best.” Junior Roosevelt Simmons is also very excited about this upcoming competition. “Nothing was hard about the original competition, because I am a natural,” Roosevelt said. Sophomore, Jaivon Spearman also cannot wait the State Competition! “I am very excited,” he said. Good luck to them all! Summit scholars show reading, writing skills at YSU English Festival Regine Mitchell, Editor in Chief The English festival is over and done with. To thought that many people would dislike the subject, but I went and found out myself that you cannot judge a book by it cover. Many people like the subject and its amazing. The English Festival is an event at Youngstown State University, centered around seven specifically chosen books. In order to get into the English festival, your English teacher will have to select you, and you will have to read seven books. When I asked Mrs. Bielik who organized the English festival, she said, “The YSU staff of course”. The English festival was held at Youngstown State University in the Kilcawley center. Mrs. Bielik said, “Our students got to participate in writing games, trivia contests, author interviews; they also were able to listen to some speakers.” When I went, I had fun, because I had never been to a place with so many people in one place at one time other than school and the mall. I would probably do it again if I could. The English Festival started at 9:00 a.m. and ended at 4:00 p.m. The amount of students that were allowed to attend is not specific but at our school, Ryan Fisher, Kat Gregory, Jonta Lafontaine, Shakila Korneagay, and myself were in attendance. We did get a lunch break because how long we were there but it was not free. Summit Academy paid for our student lunches at the Kilcawley Center. We also only got to eat once because the day was filled with activities of things to see and do on our schedule.

7. 7 Shout outs CeVon McMullen, Student Liason Summit Spring break plans CeVon McMullen, Student Liason Recently, I surveyed our school to find out what everyone plans on doing during their spring break. Here are some of the results. Many people are going to chill with friends and go to some parties. Others want to be away from the house and play some basketball and football outside so hopefully it will be nice out like a couple of weeks ago. Others will visit family that they don’t get to see that often. Others just are going to try and stay out of trouble. Some teachers have some more specific plans. Others have very similar plans to the students. Mrs. Newbrough: I am going to Disney World!!! Mr. Mastro: I will spend my time outside with my telescope looking at all the planets and stars.
