1. Summit Ink February 29, 2012 Issue 10 Teen Dating Violence Awareness month Ausanae Cameron, Opinion Editor Did you know that February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness month? Since it is, I decided to ask our school’s Behavior Specialist, Mrs. Stamp, about this subject. I first asked Mrs. Stamp about the importance of Teen Dating Violence Awareness month and she responded, “I think it is important because I think a lot of young people in violent relationships think that it’s okay; second, there are other options to help them.” I then asked her if she thought the person abusing their mated really loves them and she replied, “I think in their own way they do, but do I personally think so, no.” Next, I asked her if she thought a person should stay with the person if they are being abused. Mrs. Stamp answered, “No, there isn’t anything a person should do to start the violence.” I then asked Mrs. Stamp about how she felt about Teen Dating Violence Awareness month. She responded, “I feel it is good for kids to learn and the awareness is needed; it should be more than just a month.” After that, I asked if she thought teen dating violence was a serious problem. “Yes, because that is how you are in a relationship; the violence will continue into other relationships you are in,” Mrs. Stamp answered. I asked if she was ever in an abusive relationship, and Mrs. Stamp replied, “No, I have not been in one.” I then asked if she thought teen dating violence would ever end. She said, “I don’t think any time soon.” Lastly, I asked her what she thought starts the abuse, and she said, “Poor coping skills, poor communication skills, and the abuser thinks it is okay.” I am glad I was able to interview Mrs. Stamp on this subject. I now am a little more aware of information on this topic. Summit steps in name of love at monthly incentive Regine Mitchell, Editor in Chief The Dance is over and it was good. Therefore, I decided to interview classmates about their thoughts on it. When I asked Danielle Kleine how was the dance, she said, “It was all right because there wasn’t a lot of people. I think it was cute, because of the fun colors everyone was wearing and food was good, too. I also asked her if she enjoyed herself and she replied, “I guess.” When asked what her favorite part of the dance was, she said, “When we got to leave early.” She said she didn’t eat anything because she wasn’t hungry, even though the food did look scrumptious. While interviewing Sparkle Riley about the dance, I asked her was it fun and why. She said, “It was okay, because it wasn’t as fun as I thought it would be.” I asked Rayah Jenkins how she thought the dance went, and she replied, “It was okay; I was only there for fifteen minutes anyway.” I also asked her what her favorite part of the dance was and why; she responded, “At the end when they played “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston.” Back to Sparkle, I asked what she did at the dance and she said, “Just sitting down and a little dancing.” Rayah said, “Yes, I loved most of the songs”, when asked if she thought that this was a good monthly incentive. Sparkle was also asked if she bought any balloons from the dance, and she said, “No because I didn’t want to.” In my own opinion, it was a good monthly incentive, and I would want to do it again.

2. 2 Opinion Page The Chronicles of the Jelly Fisher Cameron’s Corner Ryan Fisher, Opinion Editor Ausanae Cameron, Opinion & Profile Editor Whitney Elizabeth Houston was one of the greatest singers of all time. She was an American recording artist, actress, producer, and model. In 2009, the Guinees Book of World Records cited her as the most-awarded female act of all-time. Houston was also one of the world's best-selling music artists. She sold over 170 million albums, singles and videos worldwide during her lifetime She released seven studio albums and three movie soundtrack albums. They all have diamond, multi-platinum, platinum or gold certification. Houston's crossover appeal on the popular music charts, as well as her prominence on MTV, starting with her video for “How Will I Know”", influenced several African-American female artists. In my opinion, Whitney Houston was a great person. She made wonderful songs. She was also an actress. Later on down the road, she started doing drugs, but I do not judge her, because everyone makes mistakes in their lives, that just happened to be one of hers. Everyone judged her like they have never made a mistake. A little while after she came back with a great song called, “I look To You.” I thought that was an amazing song. It was good to see her make it through and to come back and make a good hit. My favorite songs by Whitney would be “ I Will Always Love You’,” and “ I Look To You’’. All in all, Whitney was still a human being and everybody gets to a point in their life, where they mess up. She was able to over come hers by still releasing more great albums. Rest In Peace Whitney Houston; you will be missed The Walking Dead is a great TV show. It is one of the best shows on television, in my opinion. This show has five stars for best show on television and I agree with these ratings. The first season started up last year and the first day it came out on DVD, I bought it. The second season started in November and stopped some time in December. The second half of the second season started back up on February 12, 2012. The Walking Dead comes on every Sunday at nine o’clock. Every Sunday when it ends, I look forward to seeing the next episode the following Sunday. I just wish the seasons would not end. The Walking Dead is a very gory, bloody, violent, action packed show. People who like blood and scary movies will like this show. This show is all about killing zombies or as they call them “walkers.” Before every show, a message comes on the screen saying “Warning, some viewers might find this show offensive and children should not watch. Parental guidance is recommended”. Some of the language and some of the other things they do in the show surprise me. I sometimes cannot believe that they do not block off all of it or even allow it on television. This is my favorite show on TV. I am hopping that The Walking Dead will get enough viewers to be able to stay on the air. Spread the word, because it is a great show and I want it on the air as long as possible or until they run out of a story line.

3. 3 Profile Page Enrique Serrano Mr. Garrett Brion Koenig, Photographer & Profile Editor Brion Koenig, Photographer & Profile Editor I just finished getting to know a little bit more about our new addition to Summit Secondary school, Mr. Garrett. I found out that he is a really nice guy. He enjoys lots of fun activities outside the school day. He likes to hike, camp, and do woodworking. He is very talented in woodworking; he is artistic in making furniture for people who love woodworking. When Mr. Garret wants to watch a movie, he will get an Adam Sandler flick. His favorite music depends on his mood. Now, if he could have any dream job, it would be teaching because he likes to help inspire kids here at Summit. The thing he likes about Summit is the leniency that the kids have with the passes. It is different than other schools that walk the students around like little kids. Thanks to Mr. Pallante for that freedom. He came to Summit, because he heard it was a good school, and he was right. Also, Mr. Garrett is going to Youngstown State, but when he got his history and secondary education, he went to Westminster College. To me, Mr. Garrett is a nice and caring guy. He helps me with my shop class and gives me good advice for the OGT. I asked some teachers about Mr. Garrett, like Mrs. Crawford. She thinks that he is an awesome teacher and helps the kids a lot of times. The kids really appreciate him. Well, I really enjoyed getting to know Mr. Garrett and would like to thank Mrs. Crawford. It was really cool to get to know Mr. Garrett. Well, I got to interview my best friend Enrique Serrano. He is my Redneck friend. He also is a senior this year. Serrano and I have lots in common like we both love country music. His favorite country musicians are Jason Alden and Johnny Cash. For fun, Serrano likes to listen to country music and party until the break of dawn. Also, I think Serrano has a cool job. His job is at Blue Becon truck wash. He gets to wash all of the big trucks. He loves his job. While he was working, he learned some morals. He learned that he should think before he acts, because if you act before you think, you are really not thinking. When it is all said and done, you will feel badly because you did not think before acting. Now, Serrano has his favorite classes here at Summit Academy. It is history, because we can learn from our past so we do not repeat it. In the math department, Mr. Laney thinks that Serrano has calmed down since he first began here at Summit Academy. “He is really smart in our class keep up the good work,” Mr. Laney said. I am glad that I got to do a profile on my redneck friend Enrique and I would also thank Mr. Laney for giving me an insight on Enrique. I would like to thank Enrique for sitting down with me on his lunch hour. In closing, I would like to leave him and all the student body with this quote, “GIT-R-DONE!” Top Ten Tips to Passing the O.G.T.’s 1.) Get good night sleep 2.) Eat a full, healthy breakfast 3.) They are all participants in Destination Imagination. It will be a solving problem competition. It will take place on March 17th at Youngstown State University. There will be seven students from our school and about thirty other schools attending. The seven students that are going from our school are: Charmonique North, Jalen Mason, Julius Joy, Roosevelt Simmons, Jaivon Spearman, Jonta Lafontaine, and Marcus Magby. They will also be doing a mentoring program at the elementary school as community service. They created a commercial brochure for their project and they will perform a skit about their projects. They will also have to compete in a instant challenge where they will not know what the problem is until they get there. They could be asked to build something or write a story about a different subject and perform a skit on it. Student that are enrolled in speech and drama or chosen will be able to go and the students that go like it according to Mrs. Bielik. I then interviewed the students that are going to go. Julius Joy likes it, because he gets to express himself. He wants to change the committee’s youth and just the community its-self. He has fun helping the fifth grade boys turn their acts around and inspire them. If he could, he would go every year. Roosevelt Simmons says it is cool and fun. He likes when they do the free hand stuff most of all. Charmonique North thinks it’s pretty cool and is going because she likes to act. Her favorite part is the acting she gets to do. Jalen Mason also says that it is pretty cool and is going because he wanted to act the stories out. His favorite part is making the skits. Jaivon Spearman thinks it is a good class and he has fun. His favorite part is doing the skits as well. Jonta Lafontaine and Marcus Magby both like the class. Jonta is in it, because he needed the credits, enjoys acting, and has lots of fun. Marcus is in it because he said it seemed like it was fun and likes to perform the plays. They will be performing some great stories at Youngstown State University.

5. Students have a ball at after school program CeVon McMullen, Student Liason Leap Year, day history and traditions Anonymous 5 Every year, Mr. P organizes a basketball after school program that is run like a tournament. This year it is nothing different; it is held every Tuesday and Thursday. Mr. P invites any student in our school to stay and enjoy themselves with a friendly game or two of basketball in our gym. As of right now, we have about twenty –one students that come consistently to play after school. I think it is good that Mr. P is doing this because the students are able to have something good to do after school. This is better, rather than getting into some stuff they have no business doing and end up getting into trouble. There are four teams that that play in the after school tournaments. The games are twelve minutes each. First, we start with half court games. Then, the winners of each of the half court games play the other winners. The losers play the losers of the other half court game. Finally, the winners of those games face off for a full court challenge. The referees that run the tournaments are Mr. P and Officer Buente. It starts right after school and runs until little after four o’clock. I am glad I can be a part of this basketball program, because it is fun to be competitive and have some good times with my friends after school. As a senior, playing basketball has provided me with some lasting memories. The date is February 29th. It may seem like just another ordinary day, but I guarantee you will not see another one like it for another four years. This is because February 29th is Leap Day! Once every four years, our calendars have an extra day added on at the end of February. This extra day brings February’s grand total of days from a measly twenty-eight to a powerful twenty-nine days. The day was added to the Julian calendar in 45 BCE by Julius Caesar. Originally, any year divisible by four would become a leap year automatically. Fifteen hundred years later though, society realized that too many leap years were occurring, so the dates of the leap years were changed to just once in every four years. Since it takes the sun 365 and one fourth of a day to travel around the sun, the Leap year accounts for this, adding an additional day every four years to the calendar. Since its creation, many traditions and superstitions have begun surrounding the leap day. For instance, on this day women are supposed to propose to men. Once proposed to, a man was expected to say yes or pay the penalty. Many also think that bad luck is associated with being born on a leap year. This could be because technically if born on Leap Day, one would only have a birthday once every four years. Therefore, this means that if a sixteen year old was born on Leap Day, then technically they would only be four years old. O.G.T. approaches, Students, teachers prepare accordingly Keegan Caban, Entertainment Editor Well, we all know the Ohio Graduation Tests are coming up March 12th - through 16th. The first effort a student puts out means they can graduate. One of student’s interviewed Anthony Hughes said, “He only passed two parts of the OGT’s and missed three of them.” Hopefully, he will pass the rest here with these tests. I would say writing is the most difficult, because it is creative. There are study guides available for those who would like to prepare extra. The schedule for OGT week is Monday the twelfth Reading, Tuesday the thirteenth Math, Wednesday the fourteenth Writing, Thursday the fifteenth Science, and Friday the sixteenth Social Studies. It is important that all taking this test take it very seriously. We all need it to graduate. It also helps our school and state report cards if we do well. Honoring Black History Month 6 The Summit Ink Staff Jimmy Hughes, Youngstown Police Department Brion Koenig, Photographer Will Smith Ryan Fisher, Opinion Editor Will Smith is the person I chose for my Black History report. He is very inspirational! Will Smith is successful, he has made many movies, and has his own TV show with him as the main character. The show is called the Fresh Prince of Bell Air. I watch this show when ever I see it on because it is such a great show. Will Smith is great actor there is no denying. His son is on the way to becoming as famous or more famous as him. His son that is only thirteen has already stared in a hit movie. Success must run in Wills blood. Most likely in the future somebody else will have the same project as me for Black History Month and chose his son for their most inspirational actor. That is why I chose him for Black History Month. For the black history month I have chosen a dear friend close to me, who inspires me. His name is retired chief Jimmy Hughes. He helped me in my studies while I was in 6th-9th grade. He inspired me to do well and to respect someone for who they are not what they are. He was the only man I went to for advice and he gave me the best advice. And when I was down he cheered me up by telling me story’s when the where segregation and that made me appreciate life even more. I would like to say thank you chief Jimmy Hughes. Rosa Parks Cevon Drayton-McMullen, Student Liason Rosa Parks inspires me in many ways. She has helped me to stand up for everything I believe in. When I think about her I think about power and hope. Rosa Parks is an inspiration black African Americans woman to all of the young ladies and women across the world. Tony Dungy Anthony Hughes, Sports Editor Tony Dungy is a former professional football player and former head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts. He was the head coach of the Buccaneers from 1996 to 2001 and head coach of the Colts from 2002 to 2008. Dungy was also a former defensive back for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Tony Dungy was one of the first African American head coaches to make it to the Super Bowl and the first African American head coach to win a Super Bowl. Dungy set an NFL record for consecutive playoff appearances by a head coach in 2008, after securing his tenth straight playoff appearance with a win against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Dungy announced his retirement from the NFL as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, which went into affect in the 2008-2009 NFL season. He now serves as an analyst along side Bob Costas, Dan Patrick, Rodney Harrison, Peter King and Mike Florio on NBC’s Football Night in America. He is also a national spokesman for the fatherhood program All Pro Dad. The Colts qualified for the playoffs every season they were coached by Dungy. Tony Dungy was very successful as a head coach and former professional player in the NFL. Dungy has inspired many people during his career, including me. I am hoping to get drafted to the NFL someday. I would like to play on defense for the Green Bay Packers as an Outside Linebacker. George Washington Carver Keegan Caban, Entertainment Editor George Washington Carver was an American scientist, botanist, educator, and inventor. The exact day and year of his birth are unknown. He is believed to have been born into slavery in Missouri in January, 1864. Carver's reputation is based on his research into and promotion of alternative crops to cotton, such as peanuts, soybeans and sweet potatoes, which also aided nutrition for farm families. He wanted poor farmers to grow alternative crops both as a source of their own food and as a source of other products to improve their quality of life. The most popular of his 44 practical bulletins for farmers contained 105 food recipes using peanuts. He also developed and promoted about 100 products made from peanuts that were useful for the house and farm, including cosmetics, dyes, paints, plastics, gasoline, and nitroglycerin. He received numerous honors for his work, including the Spingarn Medal of the NAACP.
