FY 2003 Allocation Process Francesca Verdier NERSC User Services Group Lead FVerdier@lbl.gov
FY 2003 NERSC Allocations – Key Dates • June 12: • Submissions start - use the FY 2003 Request Form in NIM • Instructions will be emailed to all PIs, Proxies, and Repo Managers • July 24 (midnight): submission deadline • Sept 18: award letters emailed to PIs
What’s New for FY 2003 • Resources allocated: MPP and HPSS (no PVP) • New Science Categories: QCD and Climate • PDSF repositories (if you have PDSF repos you can renew them for FY 2003) • New questions on the request form • Revised interface for the request form • Revised review and award processes
New Questions for FY 2003 • If you are DOE funded, who is your DOE Program Manger? • Refereed publications from the last 12 months • Other publications from the last 12 months • Code description questions
Software and Algorithm Questions • Programming language, libraries and other software used • Description of the underlying mathematical model being solved (e.g. ODE, PDE) • Algorithms and numerical techniques employed (e.g. Finite Element, Iterative Solver) • Parallel programming system (e.g. MPI, OpenMP) • Plans for code development
Code Performance Questions • Mflop/s rates achieved: see http://hpcf.nersc.gov/software/ibm/hpmcount/ • Scalability data for parallel codes • Memory, number of nodes, and wallclock time required for a single run • Number of runs needed this year • For help contact the consultants, consult@nersc.gov. Also see the handout.
Communications and I/O Questions • Parallel communication bandwidth and latency requirements • Offsite network I/O requirements • Data requirements (space and bandwidth for permanent, scratch, and archival storage) • Checkpointing features
Revised NIM Interface for the Request Form • From the My Stuff: pull-down in NIM’s Main Menu choose ERCAP Requests • From the resulting ERCAP Request List click the renew link at the far right of the frame • Requests are now organized into sections, each with their own tab. You edit (and submit) one section at a time.
FY 2003 Review Process • The Program Advisory Committee (PAC) has been replaced by the Computational Review Panel (CORP), which reports to DOE. • The CORP: • reviews project accomplishments and potential for progress • provides computational ratings to the DOE Program Managers (computational approach, code optimization and scalability, communications and I/O)
FY 2003 Award Process • All production awards (DOE Base, SciDAC, Strategic) will by made by DOE Program Managers. • Startup awards will be made by NERSC. • Up to 7% of the MPP awards may be for non DOE funded projects.
Multi-Year Awards • On the FY 2003 Request Form you cannot request resources for years beyond FY 2003. • Some DOE Program Managers may decide to grant multi-year awards. If they do, your award letter will indicate this. • If you get an “out-year” award but would like more time than awarded you must re-apply and be reviewed again. If you are satisfied with the award amount, you need only fill out certain sections on the subsequent ERCAP form (e.g. Accomplishments).
