  1. Mobile Personalization Some first thoughts

  2. Existing work • Personalization in the context of stand-alone or Web applications • User stereotypes - fixed • User profiles – more dynamic • User communities – collaborative filtering • Profiles maintained, interpreted, and used by a specific application!

  3. Motivation / typical scenario • You are a tourist in a city having a GPRS, GPS, digital compass enabled mobile phone • “Points of Interest”, according to your current position, your personal interests and background, and the capabilities of your mobile device • joining local communities • Personalized advertisements

  4. Mobile Personalization-1 • How will profiles be represented and communicated in an application independent manner? • Where are the profiles kept? • How does the service understands the profile? • Profile ontologies…?

  5. Mobile Personalization-2 • How will those profiles be created and maintained? • Not only the user – can we make some assumptions? • New choices may become relevant according to location changes • Will services be able to modify profiles as well?

  6. Mobile Personalization-3 • How will service servers adapt their data and functionality to profiles in a uniform, standard way? • Current approach: agents, rules, heuristics • What if not a layer above data? • Link relevant data with possible profile choices?

  7. My impression • Not a lot of work, people are just starting to look at this direction. • Interesting, from the modelling / data management point of view • Seems like a good area to look for a phd topic • Compromise between ambitious goals and practical issues

  8. What seems relevant • Current work on mobile personalization • User modelling, personalization, collaborative fintering • Ontologies, description logics, Semantic web • Mobile technologies, web services • Context, δουλεια Θοδωρή, …?

  9. Και λοιπόν; • Ο Θοδωρής κι εγώ ενδιαφερομαστε να δουμε αν μπορει να παιξει κατι εδω. • Στοχοι: • ενημερωση, συζητησεις • δημοσιευσεις, phds • Ποιοι αλλοι ενδιαφέρονται;
