What is Leadership? • Leadership is socially constructed. • Conventional leadership thought emphasizes the nature of the leader-follower relationship from various perspectives. • Leadership is an influence relationship. • It’s the behaviors of any individual working with others toward shared goals as well as a process within organizational units (i.e. a committee, work group, or department).

The importance of leadership “Effective and ethical leadership is essential to the success of all organizations,” –CAS 2003 • To know the importance of leadership, one need only experience a situation without it. • There is no such thing as a natural born leader. • There is a growing emphasis in business and industry on teams and collaborative practices (national study)

  7. Overcoming challenges Overcoming Philosophical Confusion • Belief and Philosophy Identification • Connect your personal and professional philosophies. • Philosophy into Action • Without a solid philosophical foundation, effective leadership is diminished.

  8. Overcoming challenges Overcoming a Lack of Self-Empowerment • “Self empowerment is claimed; no one delegates empowerment to others.” • Identify any disempowering beliefs. • Know your worth • POWER UP your environment!

How do you do it? • Know your beliefs and leadership style • Know who you will be leading “Failed leadership is closely observed by today’s students who so badly need positive role models in leadership positions,” – Sampson • Read • Attend professional development • Change is okay • Remember what works and forget what does not

  12. Implementation • Initiative your own leadership experience • At work: join committees • At work: ask to Co-advise a group • Volunteer for leadership experiences • Don’t shy away from the the idea of leading!
