1. VASA (Adhatodavasika) • Vasa is well known herb in indigenous system of medicine, particularly in bronchitis. • Vasa act as an expectorant i.e. it makes the sticky phlegm dissolved and aids in it easy exit. This gives utmost relief in productive bouts of cough. It reduces inflammation and spasm of bronchial tree thus relieving attacks in asthma. • It also soothes the throat, hence relieves pharyngitis, laryngitis, chronic cough. When taken for longer period of time it builds up the whole respiratory system including lungs. Hence it can be used in chronic bronchial asthma and allergic cough. • The plant is valued for containing bronchodilator alkaloids, mainly vasicine and vasicinone. • It has potent antioxidant activity.
2. TULSI (Ocimum sanctum) • Within Ayurveda, tulsi is known as “The Incomparable One,” “Mother Medicine of Nature” and “The Queen of Herbs,” and “elixir of life” • Tulsi is considered to be an adaptogen, balancing different processes in the body, and helpful for adapting to stress. • The aromatic volatile oil present in tulsi, which contains phenols, terpenes and aldehydes. It removes excess cough from lungs and nasal passages. A decoction of tulsi leaves is a popular remedy for common cold in India. It helps to mobilize mucus in bronchitis and asthma. • Ursolic acid, Eugenol and carvacrol, Oleanolic acid present in Tulsi have strong anti-inflammatory action along with bronchiodilatory action.

MULETHI (Glycyrrhizaglabra) • It is strong anti-inflammatory agent in the treatment of allergic reactions, antimicrobial, antiulcer, expectorant and anxiolytic activities. • It is a potent medicinal plant used in single drug and also as a main content in many medicinal preparations like syrups, lozenges etc. for asthma, bronchitis, ulcers, and an anti-inflammatory. • Liquorice has been shown to work as efficiently as codeine in sore throat Glycyrrhizin is responsible for demulcent action of liquorice. 4. KANTAKARI (Solanumxanthocarpum) • Kantakari is widely used in treating various types of jwara (fever), tamakaswasa (bronchial asthma), kasa (cough) and hikka (hiccough).The whole plant is useful in vitiated conditions of vata and kapha. • Plant powder is anti-tussive and its effect on patients with bronchial asthma and nonspecific cough has been explained as due to depletion of histamine from lung and its expectorant action as due to inorganic nitrogen content. The powder of Kantkari plant is administered to children to cure chronic bronchitis. • Steroidal alkaloid solasodine is the principal alkaloid of Solanumxanthocarpumis and an important source of many actions.
5. GOJIHVA (Onosmabracteatum) • It is prescribed in bronchial asthma and in the treatment of common cold, catarrh, cough and associated respiratory distress, and fever. • It is revealed that the significant inhibitory role of O. bracteatumfruit extracts against selected respiratory tract pathogens. • It has strong expectorant action

BLACK PEPPER (Piper nigrum) • Black pepper and its principle alkaloid, piperine, possess bronchodilatory activity possibly mediated through dual in-hibition of PDE enzyme and Ca2+ influx, thus providing an evidence to the folk medicinal function of black pepper in bronchitis and asthma. • Piperine has shown bioavailability enhancing effects on many therapeutically important drugs and nutrients. Piperine increases the absorption of many drugs and nutrients from the gastrointestinal tract by various mechanisms.
7. PIPPALI (Piper longum) • It is extensively used as Anti-inflammatory, cough suppressor, antibacterial, insecticidal, hypoglycaemic, antispasmodic, immunostimulatory, hepatoprotective, activity. Long pepper is very effective in the treatment of bronchial asthma in children also. • This plant possesses alkaloid viz. Piperine which is involved to enhance the bioavailability of many drugs. It has been reported that the fruits extract of the plant had antinflammatory, antioxidant, antidiabetic, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-allergic, antiasthmatic, hepatoprotective, vasodilating, and insecticidal activities.
8. SUNTHI (Zingiberofficinale) • Zingiberofficinalis widely used in Ayurveda since long ago is undoubtedly the very important medicine. KHATMI (Althea officinalis) • Althaea officinalis is widely used traditionally for the treatment of the irritation of oral, pharyngeal mucosa and associated dry cough. • It is observed that Althaea officinalispossessed Antimicrobial, Antinflammatory, immune-modulatory, demulcent and soothing, antittusive and many other pharmacological effects. • Polysaccharides of Marshmallow exhibited statistically significant cough-suppressing activity, which was noticeably higher than that of the non-narcotic drug used in clinical practice to treat coughing. By testing many plants, the most expressive antitussive activity was observed with the polysaccharide from marshmallow, containing the highest proportion of the uronic acid constituent.

BANAPHSA(Viola odorata) • Viola odorata is traditionally used to treat bronchitis, skin conditions, cystitis and rheumatism. • Flowers of Viola odorata are used by tribal people of India for treatment of throat infection and tonsillitis. • The constituents of whole plant include an essential oil, saponins, mucilage, a glycoside (violarutin), methyl salicylate and organic acids. Due to these constituents the plant is used for bronchitis, cough and common cold.
