1. Culture: • All of the shared products of human groups • These shared products include the physical objects, beliefs, values, and behaviors shared by a group
2. Material vs. Non-Material Culture: • Material: physical objects (automobiles, clothing, buildings, etc.) • Non – Material: abstract human creations (language, beliefs, rules, family patterns, political/economic systems)
3. 4 Components of Culture • Symbols – anything that stands for something else (Flag, Statue of Liberty, Cross) • Language – organization of written/spoken symbols into a standardized system • Values – shared beliefs about what is good or bad, right or wrong • Norms – shared rules of conduct that tell people how to act in different situations
4. Folkways vs. Mores • Folkways – norms that do not have great moral significance (do not eat with your mouth open, put your napkin on your lap when you eat, etc.) • Mores – norms that do carry great moral significance (One shall not murder another human, or steal)
5. Culture Patterns, Complexes, and Traits • Trait – tool, act, or belief related to a particular situation (helmet, shoulder pads, football, stadium) • Complex – combination of traits (a Football Game) • Pattern – combination of complexes (The NFL)

In Class Discussion: • What is your opinion on some of our school rules? (tardy policy, agendas) • Why do you think we have these rules in place here at RH? • What might our school be like without these rules? • Can we live without laws in our society? Explain.
In-Class Activity/Homework: • Create a Culture Pattern of your choice and include 3 culture complexes each with 3 culture traits(10pts.) • Complete Ch. 2 (s.2) Review Guide questions 1 – 6(5pts.) • 15pts. • Due: Tomorrow (9.2.09)
