Enhancing Dairy Farming through Research and Innovation in Kenya

This project aims to harmonize activities with the research team to assess income, profitability, relative productivity per cow, and share innovations. It includes case studies on successful farms, a research framework, staff development, and strategies for water intervention. The project will also focus on monitoring and evaluation, youth and women involvement, extension system adjustments, and feeding approaches. Additionally, pilot initiatives like calf tracking and strengthening farmer relationships will be implemented.

Addition • Harmonize activities with the research team to cover among other things: • Assess income and profitability at farm level • System for capturing relative productivity per cow • Capture, understand and share innovations • Case studies e.g Why is Kabiyet so successful? • A research framework at country level linked to some universities & private sector financing of research • Staff development component on the budget • A strategy to get all farmers become milk suppliers and shareholders

  3. Water intervention • Identify sites with long term water problems • Identification of partners and governments to partner in water development activities

  4. Adjust • Simplified M&E framework • Increase focus on youth and women involvement at every level of the project • Adjust extension system at the DFBA to be based on permanently employed Service providers • change of title, and TOR

  5. Enhance Feeding approaches • Need to focus on feed quantity and quality vis avis seasonality • Emphasize dry season feeding technologies?

  6. Pilot calf tracking at the DMG level • Use of phone tracking? • Incentives • Strengthen farmer-service provider relationship • May consider new strategies & approaches like household approach in training
