What is a still life? • A still life (plural still lifes) • is a work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter.Objects are typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (food, flowers, plants, rocks, or shells) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, and so on) in an artificial setting. • Animate means • that which lives or moves, as opposed to inanimate, that which doesn't live or move.

  5. Still Life Origin • Nature morte- Dead nature (French) • ‘Stilleven’- Dutch. What is a still life? The name still life comes from the Dutch stilleven - meaning inanimate objects - the more morbid French name is nature morte.

  6. Bring in your own objects for your still life painting.Donate up to 10 pts worth of things.Toys, sculptures, flowers, fake food, candles, etc..

  7. Continuous Contour Lines You need two pages. Continuous Contour Lines… • Bike from a picture. • Full page- 25 pt artwork grade. We will finish it tomorrow. Be a Snail.

  10. Continuous Contour • Helps you: • See relationships between objects. • GO SLOWLY. • Follow the contours. • Releases pressure. • Makes it easier.

  11. Continuous Contour Get a M ARKER to use to Draw. Pass the box around. • Go slowly. • Be a snail. • DO NOT LIFT YOUR PENCIL! • Make your line is continuous.

  12. Continuous Contour • Choose 3 or more objects. • Set them on the table. • Get a frame. • Draw the objects with continuous contour lines. • Idea- Use oil pastel, then paint.

  13. Respect the Objects! • Be careful with objects. • Take care of objects. • Put them back where you got them. • We are sharing them. • Some are Miss Gauger’s personal items. You break it, you buy it. • Choose quickly, so that others can get their objects.
