Chemical Safety Guidelines LS&CO. 2008
Chemicals Management • Topics to Cover: • Chemical Information • Labeling • Storage • Segregation • Handling • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) • Waste Management and Disposal
Chemical Information • Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) • Other Sources of Information • Internet • Chemical Supplier • Various Reference Books
Chemical Information • Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) • 16 Sections • Hazardous Ingredients • Properties • PPE • Disposal • Health Effects • More…
Chemical Information Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) • Required for ALL Chemicals in Factory • Available to “Affected” Employees in Local Language • Chemicals that do NOT Require MSDS? • Office Use Chemicals • Chemicals Use is Similar to Consumer Use
Labeling • Proper labeling provides information for handling, storage, and disposal • Labels • Name of chemical • Hazard Identification (NFPA) • Chemical Classes (Transportation System)
4 4 4 W Labeling Cont.Hazard Identification (NFPA) Blue – Health Red – Fire (Flammability) Yellow – Reactivity (Instability) White – Special Hazards 4 – Extreme Hazard 3 – Severe Hazard 2 – Moderate Hazard 1 – Minor Hazard 0 – Least Severe Hazard
Hazard Material Identification Guide (HMIG) 4 – Extreme Hazard 3 – Severe Hazard 2 – Moderate Hazard 1 – Minor Hazard 0 – Least Severe Hazard Blue – Health Red – Fire (Flammability) Yellow – Reactivity (Instability) White – Special Hazards
Chemical Classes TRANSPORT CLASSIFICATION
Chemical Classes TRANSPORT CLASSIFICATION
Class 2 - Gases • Compressed • Liquefied
Class 3 – Flammable Liquids Flashpoint below 61oC • Flammable, Highly flammable, Extremely flammable
Class 4 – Flammable Solids • Low melting point solids • Substances which decompose at moderate temperatures
Class 5 - Oxidizers • Highly reactive • Assists other materials to burn rapidly • Does so in the absence of air • Produces oxygen in a fire • Organic peroxides are particularly reactive types of oxidizing substances
Class 5 - Oxidizers • European Union Commercial Symbol For Oxidizing Agent
Class 8 - Corrosive • Burns skin • Causes harm on contact • May react with certain packaging or metals • May react with packaging of other materials
Class 9 - Miscellaneous • Asbestos • Substances dangerous to the environment • Fertilizer formulations
Why Proper Storage is Important? • Proper Storage of chemicals protects, staff and employees and assures compliance with all countries and TOE standard • To prevent releases to the environment • Improper storage of hazardous chemicals may result in: • Degradation of chemical quality • Deterioration of container labels • Release of toxic gases • Fire • Explosion
Safe Chemical Storage • Stacking of Chemical Containers: • Stacking height should not exceed three (3) meters unless racking is used to prevent overloading, instability and collapse
Chemical Storage Storage Area Must Have: Safety shower/eye wash Spill kits with materials for containment and absorption Fire-fighting equipment Hose Fire Extinguisher Signs informing of required PPE Secondary Containment Largest volume + 10% Aisles and Forklift Routes are Clearly Marked
Drum Storage • Stacking • Should be less than 4 drums high • Always stacked with the closure device upward • Preferably stacked with pallets between layers • Side-mounted drums should be chocked
STACKED CHOCKED Drum Storage
Secondary Containment For a Single Tank A 110% A
Secondary Containment For Multiple Tanks in Single Containment B A 110% B
Secondary Containment For Connected Tanks in Single Containment A B 110% A+B
Outside Storage • All Outside Chemical Storage Must be Covered • Covered Drum Storage Protects: • STEEL DRUMS • Weather protection to avoid corrosion • PLASTIC DRUMS • Shade from sunlight to prevent deterioration
Chemical Classes TRANSPORT CLASSIFICATION
Class 2 – Storage Gases • RECOMMENDATIONS • Standard colour coding shows contents of gas cylinders • Store outside • Store upright • Do not expose to heat – OR RISK OF EXPLOSION • If only internal storage possible, good ventilation is required
Class 3 – Storage Flammable Liquids • RECOMMENDATIONS • Store in a cool, dry place • Away from sources of ignition (post appropriate warning signs) – OR RISK OF EXPLOSION • Keep securely closed in containers designed for this purpose • Adequate ventilation required, preferably store outside
Class 4 – StorageFlammable Solids, Self Reactive, Water Reactive RECOMMENDATIONS • Solids must be kept under protective inert liquid or gas (Stored in Liquid Solution or in a sealed gas container) • Special storage requirements such as • Sensitive To: • Impact • Friction • Water • Keep away from any source of ignition • Store in a cool place
Class 5 – StorageOxidizing Substances RECOMMENDATIONS • Store away from flammable, corrosive or explosive materials • Store away from any ignition or heat sources • May be stored with similar strong oxidizing agents if compatible
Class 6 – StorageToxic Substances RECOMMENDATIONS • Main risk is failure of containment, so implement procedures to prevent, as far as possible, punctured drums or burst packages • Be sure to label appropriately and have reliable, compatible secondary containment
Class 8 – StorageCorrosive Substances RECOMMENDATIONS • Store in a separate protected acid storage cabinet (DO NOT store on metal shelves) • Keep them Away from Flammable liquids and solids, Bases, oxidizers, Inorganic acids
Class 9 – StorageMiscellaneous RECOMMENDATIONS • Store in a separate protected area • Keep away from contact with staff • In Case of asbestos, keep it in air tight plastic or container
Chemical Storage (Summary) • The safe storage of chemicals • An effective chemical storage plan • All chemicals and chemical waste must be segregated into categories to prevent incompatible mixtures • Chemicals must always be appropriately labeled • Mark storage areas according to type of chemicals kept there (e.g. Corrosive, Flammable)
Chemical Storage (Summary) • Keep storage areas clean • Keep storage area appropriately ventilated • Keep consistent cool temperature • Keep chemical containers closed when not in use
Short Break Handout Compatibility Chart
Chemical Segregation • All chemicals and chemical waste must be segregated into categories to prevent incompatible mixtures
Chemical Segregation Compatibility Chart Terminology • KEEP APART – Keep at minimum 3m apart • SEGREGATE – Keep in separate compartments of the same store separated by at least a firewall or in separate building • ISOLATE – Keep in separate building or isolate within a cabinet designed for this purpose
