WHY PLACEMENT? • Placement tests give direction to NC(V) students (GPS) • Huge financial investment into students • Right students registered for the right programs lead to improved passing rates Prev Next
WHY TEST? • Common practice internationally • Focus on academic support, thus identify skillsshortcoming, NOT used for exclusion • Research shows : • increased academic performance after taking placement tests • Higher dropout % where no placement test is being used due to: • Improper placement of students, • Higher levels of frustration experienced by students • Inability to adapt to the learning material • X-ray photo of students’ skills and knowledge. PSYCHOLOGICAL TEST? • Only psychologists, registered counselors or psychometrists registered with HPCSA may conduct psychometric assessments: • Limited Colleges have these people on staff and have to outsource • Expensive • Time consuming • Historic background of exclusion • Not all tests are culture sensitive • Test developed by specialists Prev Next

LIMITATIONS OF TEST • Indicates suitability on basis of knowledge and skills. • Not an aptitude test • Not a psychometric interest questionnaire, but an interest activity based on the programmes offered at FET Colleges. Prev Next
WHO SHOULD BE TESTED? • At least 9 years of formal schooling. • Speak and understand English. • Healthy and rested : Medication can negatively impact upon his/her cognitive or sensory functions. • Disability, disease, illness or other physical or psychological condition influence validity and reliability of the assessment. • Refer! Psychologist, neurologist, psychiatrist, occupational therapist, or other suitably qualified professional for valid, reliable and accurate assessment of abilities. Prev Next
