Night of the Long Knives.B aim – to analyse how the Night of the Long Knives affected Hitler’s consolidation of power A/A* aim – to analyse how far Hitler had personal control in Germany by July 1934 • September 1933 Ernst Roehm made a speech where he stated: "A tremendous victory has been won. But not an absolute victory! The SA and the SS will not tolerate the German revolution going to sleep and being betrayed at the half-way stage by non-combatants. Not for the sake of the SA and SS but for Germany's sake. For the SA is the last armed force of the nation, the last defence against communism. If the German revolution is wrecked by the reactionary opposition, incompetence, or laziness, the German people will fall into despair and will be an easy prey for the bloodstained frenzy coming from the depths of Asia. If these bourgeois simpletons think that the national revolution has already lasted too long, for once we agree with them. It is in fact high time the national revolution stopped and became the National Socialist one. Whether they like it or not, we will continue our struggle - if they understand at last what it is about - with them; if they are unwilling - without them; and if necessary - against them.“ • How would Hitler have interpreted this speech in September 1933?

  2. What is the difference between the SS and the SA? SA, Stormtroopers, Brownshirts. Intended to carry out violence on the streets. In 1922 they became more professoinal. In 1931 Rohm took over and expanded it from 70,000 to 170,000. Hitler saw them as a political and not as a military force. He didn’t want them to carry out their own revolution. SS. The only difference in their uniform is that they had grey and black hat. They had to keep order in indoor political meetings from around 1920. They were more professional. Himmler left the SA and became leader of the SS in 1929. Himmler was very close to Hitler.

  3. Why did the Night of the Long Knives occur? Fill in the boxes with why these individuals were targets using p.175 for Rohm and the hand outs for the others. Gustav von Kahr Gustav Rohm Schleicher Strasser SA- Hitler wanted it to be subordinate, Rohm wanted it to seize and retain power. Himmler wanted the SS to break away from the control of the SA.

  4. What happened at the Night of the Long Knives? • Over 50 SA leaders killed, some say as high as 1000 • Many SA officers arrested • Proudly defended actions to the Reichstag

What was the impact of the Night of the Long Knives? • Did it help him to consolidate his power? • Mussolini had advised him to eliminate the threat from the left in their meeting of June 1934 • It showed Hitler wouldn’t be a puppet • He got Edgar Jung murdered and Papen placed under house arrest • Army swore an oath to Hitler once Hindenburg died • In July 1934 the SS broke away from the SA and came under Hitler’s personal and direct command • Hitler managed to make it acceptable for his opponents to be murdered. The state accepted his actions. • How did Hitler get away with it? • Conservative elite feared the SA and resented by the Reichswehr • Needed the support of the elite now that he was in power rather than the army • Reassured the elite that there would be no left-wing revolution after it
