  1. Fans and citizens Unlikely allies? Liesbet van Zoonen Hoogleraar Media en Populaire Cultuur Universiteit van Amsterdam

  2. Fans & Citizens • What is a fan? • What is a citizen • Fans flourish • Citizens fail • Why compare them? • El Candidato de la Gente, Argentina • The American Candidate, US • Vote for me, UK

  3. Big Brother • Stephen Coleman for Hansard Society: • Representation • Delegation • Resemblance • Big Brother is resemblance and recognition • Politics is delegation and alienation • Lessons: • Authenticity • Transparency • Directness

  4. Similarities • Structural • Result of performance • Activities • Information, deliberation, judgment, alternatives • Psychological • Cognitive and effective • Thus: fans can be citizens and vice versa

  5. Citizens as fans? • The American Candidate • Big Brother • Fox • Ratings • Vote for me • Idols • ITV • Ratings

  6. Why doesn’t it work? • Superficial resemblance: voting •  Politics •  Popular • Other reasons? • ….. • ….. • …..

  7. Fans as citizens? • Prince: Cinnamon Girl • Student project • Compare political and fan discourse • Political discourse • denial • Fan discourse • deliberation

  8. Fan deliberation (1) • “It was a great video. I'm glad that the ending didn't of course end with the explosion. Kinda showing her thinking about doing it and her looking around at those innocent people that she couldn't go through with it. Very powerful, this will definitely get a lot of comments from the critics and who will probably blow the whole thing out of proportion” (www.npgmc.com, 2004)

  9. Fan deliberation (2) • There is a sense of fear out there not only in the entertainment industry but even in everyday life. In my city during the start of the war, there were people that had bumper stickers expressing opposition to the war. Unfortunately, there started to be complaints of people with those stickers having their tires slashed. I will be honest and say I myself have been hesitant about placing a John Kerry Sticker on my car, particularly because I work in a part of town that is HEAVILY supportive of our President. But this week I decided to do so out of principle. America should not be this way. Our country is so divided right now and it is shameful”

  10. Fan deliberation (3) • “The main reason why I think I'm steering clear of commentary on this matter is that the media is doing exactly what it shouldn't be doing. Instead of using this video as an opportunity to discuss the real issues surrounding 9/11, xenophobia, the lies fed to us by the government and the role of the media in doing so, major outlets like NBC are going to use the video as a catalyst to point the finger in the other direction; pointing the finger at Prince for asking us to think for ourselves. No meaningful dialogue will come from this in my opinion.” (www.npgmc.com, 2004)

  11. Discussion & conclusion • Citizens as fans? • (dis)advantages • Fans as citizens? • (dis)advantages • How useful is such a connection? • Postmodern condition • In context of deliberative democracy?
