Abraham’s Descendents • Isaac • Also known as Ishmael (becomes the father of other tribes in the Palestinian Region) • Jacob • Has 12 sons, each becoming one of the 12 tribes of Israel • Joseph • Moves the Hebrews to Egypt to escape famine • Eventually the Jews become slaves to the Egyptians
Exodusc.1500-1200 BC • After 400 years in Egypt, Moses leads the people back to Canaan • They fight, retake the land, and set up the Kingdom of Israel • Conquered by Babylonians, but allowed to keep religious and cultural practices • Rebuild the Temple in Canaan • Conquered again by the Roman Empire
Diaspora • Jews leave the homeland and set up all over the Roman Empire • C. 70 AD the 2nd Temple is destroyed by the Romans • They become persecuted as a minority in many parts of the world • This persecution climaxes in Nazi Germany during the Holocaust coinciding with WWII
Beliefs • Monotheistic – worship Yahweh, one and true omnipotent being • Law Code: Ten Commandments • Hebrews believe they have a special place in Yahweh’s plan for the world • Messiah: Prophets of Judaism prophesy that the son of Yahweh will come to deliver the Hebrews, and that the dead will be resurrected
Christianity • Believe that Jesus Christ of Nazareth was the Messiah of the Hebrews (many convert). • Christianity begins to dominate the course of history in the world
