Hebrews: Date & Location • Probably Written before the Destruction of the Jewish Temple in 70 AD (10:11; 13:11) • Paul was Martyred in 64 AD • Timothy visited Paul, was arrested under Nero & later Freed (13:23) • Probable date is 68 AD - NOTE: Paul is not mention in Hebrews • Hebrews written from Italy (13:24) probably from Romeor writer was writing to Christian in Rome
Hebrews: Background & Purpose • Hebrews was primarily written to Jewish Christians being Persecuted for their Faith • Early Christians for the most part Jews • Since Christ had delayed His Return, many were considering Returning to Judaism • Epistle is written to Wavering Jewish believers, Encouraging them to Stand Fast in their Faith • Christ is Overwhelmingly Superior to the Law, prophets, angels, Moses, Joshua, Aaron and the Covenant & Whole Ritual under the Law (Old Covenant Replaced by the New)
Hebrews: Content • Key word is “better” used to describe Christ & Gospel Benefits under the New Covenant • Epistle is Divided in two parts, • Doctrinal Exposition (1:1-10:18) – The Glory of the Person & Work of Jesus Christ is Set Forth • Practical Application (10:19-13:25) – the Christian Life (this great salvation) is lived out on earth only through the Empowerment of the life of Jesus Christ & His Holy Word to His Disciples
Hebrews: Christ Revealed • The Book of Hebrews was written in its entirety to Reveal Jesus Christ as Savior & Lord of His Church, the Body of Christ • Christ is Superior to Old Covenant Law • Apostasy is not an Option (Greek ἀποστασίαa defection or revolt, from ἀπό, "away, apart", στάσις, "stand", "standing") is the formal disaffiliation from, abandonment or renunciation of a religion by a person.)
Hebrews: Personal Application • Although Hebrews was written to, • Jewish Converts to Christianity • Probably Gentile Converts to Judaism • The Admonitions are relative to All Believers in Jesus Christ, • Jesus Christ is the ONLY Way of Salvation (Jn .14:6) • Faithfulness to one’s Calling in Christ is Essential (Rom. 11:29) • Adherence to Christian Disciplines is necessary to, • Live a Life of Holiness according to God’s Word (Heb. 12:14 & Jn. 4:23)) • Walk in the Power of Holy Spirit Confirming Christian Hope (Jn. 4:23)
