"Why don't we start our own business?" My mum asked. It was summer, and I had just finished school for my undergraduate studies. My mum had been so eager for us to have a family business as she knew I was smart and we all had passion. Since childhood, I had always wanted to become an electrical engineer. I loved to play around with the electric circuits and mess with gadgets. At times, I had even been mildly electrocuted. It made me understand the real hazard of playing with electricity, but it never deterred me. Thinking about what mum had said, I started getting some ideas of what we could do to start as a business. I decided to do some more research on some of the firms that were engineering related to know what a viable option could be. Machines are a thing for me, and so I thought generators could be something to try. I told my mum about it, and she was excited that we could really start on our dreams to own a business. We sat down with my dad as well and came up with a proper business plan. After that, it was time to consult a few entrepreneurs and the work began. The business started very well, and we were able to make a few returns on the very first open source report builder month. One thing I didn’t realize is even with a business geared for engineers, how much we needed different type of software applications. We use accounting programs to manage our cash flow and transactions, crm programs manage our customers, a custom database to store information we couldn’t find a software for and an ad hoc report building software to create custom reports as we needed them. Sometimes I think back and remember the summer when mum had asked about starting our own business. I can’t believe it has only been two years. We have come a long way already, and I am so glad I listened to mum.
